Colin Wright, the most successful team manager in British Superbike history, is planning a return to racing after five years out as he misses the buzz of competition.
The former GSE boss, who notched up 100 wins with riders like Leon Camier, Leon Haslam, Gregorio Lavilla, Neil Hodgson, James Toseland, Troy Bayliss, John Reynolds and Shane Byrne under his tutelage, walked away from the sport when close friend and GSE owner Darrell Healey called it a day at the end of 2009
But now, after running a successful plant business and helping Chris Walker set up his new Kawasaki dealership in Grantham, Wright thinks it’s now time to get back in the saddle.
“It was a sad time when GSE stopped racing, we had a great team and more than a few successes. But the recession hit everyone and the time was right to stop. Darrell took me on to work in his plant hire business. Every day was a school day. For many reasons, I will be forever grateful to Darrell,” said Wright, speaking to bikesportnews.com this morning.
“In December last year, I heard Chris was opening a Kawasaki dealership in Grantham and I asked if I could help. He offered me a job and in January I became a painter and decorator in the build up to the opening.
“During my sabbatical I didn’t feel I was missing racing. The truth is, I was enjoying a lifestyle never experienced before, weekends off, social events on Friday evenings and summer holidays but I was born into racing, it’s what I know.
“I have a couple of opportunities that I’ll be considering but, ultimately I’d like to assist a team in realising their expectations. In a nutshell, I know what it takes.”
