British Superbike Race Director Stuart Higgs has released an official statement regarding the unexpected events of race one at the seventh round of the Visk British Superbike Championship at Mallory Park today that gave James Ellison of Airwaves Yamaha the win after a six-bike pile-up.
Stuart Higgs said: “If a race has to be stopped after the leader has completed two thirds of the original race distance, rounded down to the nearest number of laps, it will be considered to have finished.
a) The order of classification shall be based upon the order of last crossing the finish line prior to the showing of the red flag, and only competitors who are racing at the showing of the red flag will be classified.”
The incident was initiated by Josh Brookes of HM Plant Honda who under braking caused the rear wheel to off the ground, but as it came back into contact with the ground Brookes was launched from his machine that continueD on to unfortunately hit race leader MSS Colchester Kawasaki of Simon Andrews with the aftermath causing others to also crash.
No official comments as of yet have been received from Brookes or his team on the incident who was visually apologetic towards others at the track side following the event. However he received clear disapproval from spectators as he walked back to the pits.
It is believed that Brookes has injured his thumb but all the others riders were uninjured.
Further comments were also made live on TV by some team managers, who have since taken part in a meeting between Stuart Higgs and the Team’s Liaison Group and the decision is now believed to have been accepted.
