Shane Byrne had to fight for it, but yet again wins for Airwaves Ducati in race one at Mallory Park this afternoon ahead of HM Plant Honda team mates Leon Haslam and Cal Crutchlow, whilst team mate Leon Camier crashed out on the first corner.
Crutchlow was front of the pack into the first corner followed by Michael Laverty of Relentless Suzuki and Haslam. Over the next couple of laps the front runners became a leading group of five with Rizla Suzuki Tom Sykes and Byrne tagging on to the first three. The corner wasn't without incident as Leon Camier on the second Airwaves Ducati crashed after clipping Billy McConnell on the MSS Kawasaki who had to sit up.
Leon Haslam started the overtake battle in lap three by making an inside move on Laverty at the Shaw's hairpin, but after running wide he lost out. A couple of laps later the fun really began as Haslam replicated the move, this time making it stick. Byrne also tried to take advantage, but as Laverty came back across the two touched causing Shakey to touch the hairpin wall forcing him to a stand still.
Laverty with a foot down went straight, but managed to get back on track and both continued the race. Even though both riders succesfully exited into the bus stop Sykes mean while had benefited and moved up to third. On lap 12 Bryne seemed to drop off the pace, but all soon changed as he clawed away at the riders in front.
After a few settled laps Haslam made his move again at the hairpin on Crutchlow to try and take the lead. This time Crutchlow kept it tighter and fought off his team mate whilst Byrne moved up to fourth. Exactly a lap later Leon Haslam succeeded replicating his move and Byrne moved upto third. Sykes did try to fight back the next time around but was unable to gain back his position, he made an inside move on Shakey, but ran too wide unable to retain the position.
Byrne finally took second away from Crutchlow on lap 25 to take the lead on lap 26 at the Devil's elbow coming onto the straight. By this time they were in amongst back markers, unfortunately one became sandwiched between each of the leading riders in turn until two laps later when all of the five riders got ahead. This may have hindered some riders final attack before the chequered flag.
Further down the grid Michael Rutter after having a problem on the starting grid was forced to jump onto his second bike and start from the back of the race. After a successfull start he was running in 14th by lap three, but sadly walked away with no points after crashing out on the penultimate lap.
Michael Laverty couldn't continue his front row success after suffering a minor crash, he managed to rejoin to pick up some points in 11th place. Tristan Palmer continued his successful weekend by running in sixth infront of the likes of Karl Harris of AIM Yamaha Racing for a while and settled for eight overall.
Unfortunately the demon of bad luck struck the Rob Mac Racing rider Harris once again, following a stone damaging his radiator Harris had to retire on lap ten. Atsushi Watanabe had a good start from 12th on the grid and was running in six place behind his team mate until he was pushed down to finish ninth overall.
The race didn't go well for Scott Smart of Hawk Kawsaki who retired from the race and replacement rider James Haydon frustratingly lost the front at Edwinas mid way throught the race.
John Laverty of North West 200, who has been dominating the cup championship this weekend took the Daily Star Cup win, ahead of by Quay Honda Gary Mason and the returning MV Augusta Chris Burns in third.
