Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes can sleep well tonight, safe in the knowledge that he has secured his place in the Showdown. The Northern Ireland based rider finished every MCE British Superbike race at Oulton Park on the podium during the triple-header this weekend.
Brookes dominated the final race of the day at the Cheshire track and had a seven second advantage over Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki's Shane Byrne to take the win. The victory had eluded him in the both races one and two – even though he came close to doing the triple, but had to settle for two second place finishes, along with a first place rostrum.
“It is difficult track to pass on at the best of times and I knew there was only one dry line and I knew it was going to be hard to overtake, so that is why I wanted a good start, and to take the lead,” said Brookes, at the track.
“I felt that Kiyo or maybe Shakey didn’t want to lead because of the mixed conditions out on track. In race three I was able to take the lead, then I thought when I got out in front I didn’t know how fast I could go. So the first lap through Druids was a bit dodgy and you can have a sense of where the grip is, and when you go out on the second and third lap the line was more defined – but then it began to sprinkle with rain again.
“Then at Shell I had to slow down as it felt a bit slippery, but going down into Hizzy’s it was gone again, and the rain stopped. I kept pushing on and I felt in race one on Saturday afternoon I got a bit of a lead and then Kiyo came past me so I didn’t want that to happen again. So I got on the gas and pushed as fast as I could - as if all the riders were really close behind me.”
