Oxford TAG Triumph's Billy McConnell took his second win of the season at Oulton Park this weekend in what was one of the best races to occur in the Fuchs-Silkolene British Supersport Championship so far this year, claiming the win a gnat's ahead of series leader Ben Wilson, who came from the back of the grid.
It looked like Seton Yamaha's Sam Warren was going to take the lead, but Alastair Seeley of Relentless Suzuki nipped to the front from the second row of the grid. Paul Young of Oxford TAG Triumph took second quickly away from Warren in third. McConnell lost out on the start by slipping to fourth from his pole position. Championship leader Ben Wilson astonishingly started from 26th on the grid after suffering problems in qualifying, but by lap two was running in 14th overall.
It was clear this was not going to be just your average race with the top four already side by side, constantly swapping positions mid corners, riders gaining or losing two if not three places. At some point each of the top three riders led the race. Meanwhile as all eyes were fixed on the front, the pack of four became five, yes Wilson stunningly had not only joined the group but taking fourth place ahead of Warren.
Wilson seemed to get held up while trying to pass Seeley, but eventually found a way through. Warren seemed the quieter one of the bunch waiting to take his move when he could and lying in wait for the carnage that may have happened in the pack in front. As the chequered flag drew near, Warren managed to slickly dive in front of Young but the lead was done to just three riders.
It was Seeley who led as they approached the final corner followed by McConnell and Wilson who all gave a new meaning to the word 'attack'. As they had been for the past couple of laps, all riders took took different lines into and out of corners trying to find a way around each other or defend the lead if they had it. The last corner was no different.
Unknown to all who watched it was and until they crossed the beam it was McConnell who took the win, ahead of the unstoppable and ever impressive Wilson with Seeley having to settle for a not so disappointing third. A mere 0.068s split the top three.
In the cup championship it was yet again Trickbits John Simpson who took the cup win, his fifth of the season, in 19th overall, Shaun Winfield of Oxford TAG Triumph stood on the podium for the sixth time as Paul Curran of PCR Triumph claimed his debut podium of the season.
