Gearlink Kawasaki's Ben Wilson rode to a winning double in round two of the British Supersport championship at Oulton Park over the Bank Holiday weekend to extend his series lead to 20 points over Jack Kennedy.
Once again Wilson (29) from Kirton near Boston dominated proceedings throughout practice and qualifying although things were tight at the top and he realised the two races would be very competitive.
Once the opening race got underway Ben flew off the start line at a fast rate of knots but was beaten to the first corner by Alistair Seeley. But after waiting for his tyre to kick in Wilson made his move at Lodge on the second of 12 laps and took the lead. Jack Kennedy tried a pass at Shell on lap three but Wilson fended him off and retained his slender lead all the way to the chequered flag crossing the finish line for his second win of the current campaign.
“That was a good race,” said Wilson. “I realised it wasn’t going to be an easy race and I would perhaps be unable to pull away so I got my head down and battled on. We got the result we needed and now have to work on tomorrow’s race to finish the job off.”
As the riders lined up for the start of the feature race on Monday Ben was on pole, but as they shot off the line it was Seeley who got the hole shot into Old Hall and staved off the Gearlink Kawasaki rider’s attention until lap two when Ben nipped through at Lodge to take the lead at the end of the lap. He held station until the midway stage of the 16 lap affair when Seeley managed to get past him once again. But the Irishman’s lead was short-lived as Wilson powered the Kawasaki back ahead two laps later and held off the opposition, extending his lead to 2.5s at the chequered flag to claim his second victory of the weekend and extend his championship lead to 20 points over Jack Kennedy who came in third.
“That was another good race for me,” said Wilson. “I really enjoyed the close racing and its now time to turn my attention to the next round at Croft where I can carry on with the job in hand. So…..we will take these two wins from Oulton and try to extend our advantage at Croft in two week’s time.”
