WFR Honda's Alex Lowes has set the quickest time in this afternoon's MCE British Superbike second free practice but was given a run for his money by Luca Scassa, on the Padgett's Honda, while Shane Byrne suffered a high-speed crash at Chapel which put him out of the session.
Byrne went down at Chapel and walked away from the accident but his bike suffered extensive damage. The title challenger has been limited to two laps so far today as this morning's session was wet and the still-injured rider didn't fancy it.
Tyco Suzuki's Josh Brookes was third quickest and two tenths behind Lowes' quickest lap of 2'08.056 but Scassa was the man on the move, getting to within 0.004s of Lowes' time after briefly going to the top of the timesheet with a minute remaining.
Reigning champion Tommy Hill hauled himself up to fourth quickest late in the session while James Westmoreland, who is challenging for the BSB Riders Cup, took fifth ahead of Showdown man Michael Laverty.
Buildbase BMW's Barry Burrell continued his recent run of form, taking seventh spot ahead of ahead of WSBK exile Jakub Smrz on the Splitlath Aprilia. Robbin Harms put the Doodson Honda in ninth while Peter Hickman rounded out the top ten, 1.5s off the pace.
