TAG Triumph’s Paul Young was determined in his returned to continue challenging the Fuchs-Silkolene Supersport Championship for the 2009 season after his 2008 team MAP Embassy Racing folded due to funds.
Then teammate to Glen Richards it was looking that Young would return to race in the one of the most competitive championships in Britain with his setup merely in the back of a van.
The first glint of hope was given when his previous team members wanted to stay together so plans were put in motion to form a new team for the up and coming season. However suddenly once again Young found himself without a team and stranded, before the opportunity of TAG Triumph arrived.
Young said: “It’s been a bit of rush, before he pulled out all the time was spent on finding the budget rather than organising the bikes and it was near the start of the season and the bikes weren’t ready.”
“I then saw these guys, Rob Winfield and Lee Machin and they said they wanted to create a team. They had the trucks and workshops where as I had the bikes so it fitted.”
In addition to Young the team also run Peter Ward in the Supersport Cup championship and Shaun Winfield, son of one of the team owner’s, in the Relentless British 125GP championship coming into the paddock as a strongly balanced team.
Each rider has experienced the eventfulness of racing including Young who started the season off with an injury. The next memorable weekend in both a good and a bad way was Donington.
Young returned to the podium for the first time this season to take second behind Steve Plater, but ahead of Dan Linfoot, both main championship contenders. All who watched saw Young as we know him battling to the very end.
After being led into a false sense of belief that luck had turned for the better, Young was disqualified from the results due to his bike being 500g under the minimum weight limit. Even though this was a disappointing, unexpected end, Young clearly proved the capability of both him and the Triumph 675.
Young said: “The championship is tighter this year, more open and more difficult. Everyone is over the moon with the team, we’ve not been dealt the best of cards, but the rest of it, is on track.”
