Bimota Alstare Junior’s Christophe Ponsson has made his MCE British Superbike debut at Thruxton, and even though he will be making three wildcard appearances including at Oulton and Cadwell, the Frenchman is hoping that if all goes well they will be able to compete till the end of the season.
“I am wildcarding in the next three, but I hope to finish the season, but we are not sure yet but we are talking about completing the rest of the season and finishing [at Brands Hatch],” said Ponsson, speaking to bikesportnews.com from the circuit.
It is a weekend of first's for the teenager, as it is his maiden ride on the Hampshire circuit, and it is also his first time riding his bike in the wet. Ponsson, who has raced in both the European Superstock 600 and 1000 championships has never ridden the Bimota in the rain, until today, so it’s unknown territory for the 18-year-old and the crew.
“Thruxton is special, as I don’t know the track, and it is the first time on the Bimota in the wet, so it is absolutely all new for me. When you see Byrne and Hopkins all in front, it is not an easy way to learn, but I am definitely getting better.
“I have always loved and watched BSB and the tracks are all amazing, so it would be crazy for a young guy to race here, but I said to the team if we could get here then that would be great – and it would provide me with more experience too.
“I want to continue to improve, but I am prepared for the wet weather, even though it is the first time I have been out in the rain on this bike, but if it is dry in the races tomorrow then I will hopefully close the gap on the front guys.”
