Thruxton BSB: Byrne secures record breaking win

Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki Shane Byrne secured a record breaking 44th race win today in the final MCE British Superbike race at Thruxton.

But the race was cut short because of a crash involving PR Racing Kawasaki’s Karl Harris and Bathams Honda rider Tommy Bridewell. The red flag came out and the race was stopped after 14 laps. Harris walked away unharmed, but Bridewell is being treated for a suspected leg injury.

But that was not the only incident during the race, the safety car made not one, but two appearances because of crashes involving Samsung Honda’s Ryuichi Kiyonari, who came off his bike on lap two, and then later an incident involving Halsall Racings Lee Costello.

With all the yellow flag action, it meant that not much racing went on, but Byrne did have to fight off charges from Samsung Honda’s Alex Lowes, and Milwaukee Yamaha’s James Ellison. Tyco Suzuki rider Josh Brookes did not want to miss out on all the action and made sure he kept up with the other three, when the safety car was not out on track.

With six laps to go racing was stopped and the riders could no longer try and fight for the lead. It is Lowes’ fourth podium out of four races, as he finished the race in second, followed by Cumbrian rider, Ellison.

Brookes failed to improve on his second place finish this afternoon, after just missing out on a top three position. Veteran racer Bathams Honda Michael Rutter did manage to make it inside the top five, to gain some valuable points, and hot on his heels was young upstart Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Keith Farmer, who was still nursing a bad hand from his crash in race one.

Quattro Plant Kawasaki rider Chris Walker managed to stay out on the track this time to finish the race in seventh, followed by battling Buildbase BMW team-mates Jon Kirkham and James Westmoreland, and Lloyds British GBMoto Honda rider Peter Hickman rounded off the top ten.
