‘Unfinished business’ for Hopkins in 2014

Tyco Suzuki newboy John Hopkins is relishing his return to the MCE British Superbike Championship in 2014 and says there is definitely unfinished business after his loss to Tommy Hill in 2011.

The former MotoGP rider considered rides in MotoGP and World Superbikes but opted to join Philip Neill’s Northern Ireland-based squad after conversations with the team at Silverstone’s MotoGP round last season.

“I definitely had some other options on the table – options in World Superbike and MotoGP but my mindset was I want to come back and I definitely want to race for the win. I personally feel there is definitely some unfinished business within British Superbike which is easily explainable with how close it came down to in 2011,” said Hopkins, speaking to bikesportnews.com from his California home.

“I don’t feel robbed all anything like that because it happened how it should, it is what it is for that but there were a few mechanicals throughout the year which hindered us. I still feel like there is unfinished business, there is no doubt there is going to be strong competition this year but our ultimate aim is to try and go out and win the championship. That is going to be a process, I am going to have to get comfortable on a bike again, and I haven’t competitively ridden a road race bike since Magny Cours in 2012.

“There is going to be a lot to get back into but on the other hand we also have the knowledge of the circuits which I didn’t have in 2011. There were a lot of places I went to in 2011 that I had never seen before the race weekend so I think that will play in our favour, but it is definitely going to be difficult.”
