Rules are rules. We saw that at Brands on Saturday and you can't expect the rules to be changed because of one incident. When you enter a game you have to play by the rules laid down in that game. If you lose out because of the rules then it's your own ignorance that has caused it. If you benefit from the rules, then you keep your mouth shut.
You can't bitch about the rules after the rules have been made or, indeed, if you fall foul of the rules. What you have to do is play the game according to the rules that are put in front of you. The team screwed up because they didn't tell Gary that Shakey wasn't in that first race at Brands. I would bet my house they were putting the gap to Shakey on Gary's pitboard and that he was closing on Gary which would have made him try harder.
It's not up to me to tell anyone how they convey information on a pitboard but, for instance, a couple of years ago when Shakey was riding for us, he passed under a yellow at Brands and he had to go back a place or risk being penalised, so we told him that on the board and he did it. It's up to the team to make sure the rider knows what's going on.
When people fall foul of the rules, it is because they don't read the rules in the first place. They don't ever think it is going to happen to them. Gary having a blast like he did is fine because everyone is entitled to vent their spleen but in reality, Shakey didn't do anything wrong to my mind. I'm not saying that because I'm a Shakey supporter, I don't support anyone, but he didn't break the rules.
Shane actually played by the rules. The only influence that Shakey had over that race was that Gary tried harder and nearly crashed himself. That's Gary's problem, not Shakey's. Forget the ifs and buts and talk about the facts. Shakey did what he was instructed to do by his team and that was go out and get a fast lap for the next race which was within the rules.
People will say 'well, what if this happened or that happened'. Well, the fact is nothing happened. Had I been in that situation, I dare say I would have told Shakey to go out, get his fast lap and come in but Honda must have believed there was a chance of him getting a point.
It has been suggested the times that set the grid for the second race should be taken from the tyre they started the race on or the tyre they change to in the pits has to be the same. That's a waste of time for a start. If you're going to do that, you might as well say as soon as you enter pitlane your race is over. If that is the case, you could end up with no-one in a race and 20 laps to go.
We benefited from the rules at Mallory in 2009 when Leon and James finished first and second. Everyone bitched and moaned and whatever, but the only person that crashed as a result of Brookes doing what he did was Simon Andrews. The rest fell off because they panicked, so we won by the rules. In other cases where we have lost by the rules we have taken it on the chin. In this instance, no-one gained or lost as a result of the rules so there's no need to advocate changing it.
The fact is that on Saturday at Brands Hatch nothing happened and that should be the end of it.
