'This is a learning year, but I can do the times' says Day

AIR Racing Two Brothers Kawasaki's Josh Day talks to www.bikesportnews.com at Thruxton this weekend about his step up to the MCE Insurance British Superbike EVO Championship for this season.

The Cirencester rider and current Metzeler National Superstock 600cc Championship took on the new challenge with the same team as last year.  Day said: 'It's been hard work, I really enjoyed Croft but expected to really really be flying here as I went well here on the 600s last year, but I have been almost three seconds slower than I was on the 600cc.  It's not all me but I should have been a bit better than that.'

'Andy Rothery, Team Manager also my main sponsor said he wanted to do the championship and asked if I did. You never turn down an opportunity like that. I know I've got the ability to do it but we've got to get up to that level, that will be the hardest bit.'

'We've made changes , we're all getting used to it, and made a few changes. You think you're flying, Laverty comes past you pulls in front of you, breaks 20 miles later than you and then he's gone. That's probably the best thing, watching how the top boys are, in a league of their own, but one day.. They were where I was once.'

The team are getting some information from Bournemouth Kawasaki, especially as Day missed the first couple of rounds so race wise they are ahead of them and the team are having to play catch up. There have been some problems with the electronics which again as a team they are sorted out behind everybody else.

Day said: 'I just need time on the bike to get used to it. We can test alright. This whole year is going to be a learning year. Obviously you are worried about results but I am not too worried as long as I get some good times. I just need to get used to it and get a few more tests in then I can come back and it should be good, hopefully. I am still trying my hardest, every racer does, I am loving the speed of the Kawasaki, it doesn't feel too much different to the 600cc to ride but if I am going three seconds slower than on my 600cc than on the 1000cc, that just doesn't sound right does it?'

After making alterations to his position that turned out not to be suitable this definitely would have effected his time so they are looking to improve for the next session. He said: 'I just felt uncomfortable this morning, I just felt really cramped on it and on top of it. I didn't feel that I was part of the bike and there are a lot of fast corners here, like fourth gear corners and when you don't feel part of the bike at that speed it's not the most confident. I felt all over the place.'

'It's a learning year so I am not going to get down about it, I know I can do the times. As a racer I would like to be more prepared because the times I do, could put me at the front in stock 1000cc.  The people I was racing against last year on the 600cc are doing really well in Supersport so I know I could be their as well. There is no-one in this championship that I can guage my experience with, they've all got a lot more experience than me but the whole team is working really hard and especially the guys have been learning a lot.'
