Francesco Bagnaia had his worst weekend of the season at Aragon and wants to forget about it before the Misano Grand Prix.
Francesco Bagnaia leaves Aragon with ninth place in the Sprint Race and a DNF in the Grand Prix. This has been his worst weekend of the 2024 season.
Bagnaia's DNF in the Grand Prix was part of an incident with Alex Marquez, where both Ducati riders collided. Bagnaia and Marquez were battling for third place when contact occurred and neither rider ended up finishing the race.
However, Bagnaia does not believe that the crash was just another incident as he believes Marquez was trying to cause contact.
"I am not very good honestly, I feel a lot of pain in my neck, but it could be much worse so it is ok," Bagnaia said when asked about his physical condition after the crash.
"My view is the same view of everybody who has a normal point of view in terms of racing. It is quite clear what happened. He was wide, I was in front with much more speed. I entered the corner without closing the line like I was alone because I knew he was there, my speed was enough to overtake him without any problems. As soon as I entered corner 10 I heard his engine, he was opening the throttle, and he was trying to arrive at the contact.
"I looked at the data to see what he did, he remained at 60% - 40% throttle even when he crashed. This is very strange for a rider I think. In my opinion, it is impossible that he did not see me, I was already in front of him before changing direction."
"Conditions were sh*t for both starts..." - Pecco Bagnaia
Bagnaia was not only involved in a controversy with Marquez, but he also had harsh words to say about the MotorLand Aragon circuit condition.
Historically Bagnaia has been competitive at Aragon as he finished first and second in the last two Grands Prix held at the circuit. But this year the circuit was plagued with grip issues, especially on the starting grid, something that Bagnaia fell victim to twice.
At the start of the Sprint and Grand Prix Bagnaia was on the dirty part of the track. This caused his rear tyre to spin up and lose all of his drive going into turn one, resulting in dangerous manoeuvres throughout the field.
"I want to forget this weekend overall," Bagnaia told MotoGP.com when asked about the 2024 Aragon Grand Prix. "It was one of the worst in years, honestly Friday morning was a disaster but my feeling in the afternoon was good.
"Then on Saturday morning, I got a front-row start, but conditions were sh*t for both starts. They were supposed to clean it but they didn't because the track was a disaster on that side of the starting grid. For me, it is not acceptable because everybody needs the same level of grip at the start and this wasn't the situation.
"Already from that moment, I understood that it was difficult. But I managed to recover a lot, and my pace was very good, I was gaining five or six-tenths a lap on the guys in front of me. But I did not finish."
After this weekend Bagnaia has lost the lead in the MotoGP World Championship. The Italian is now second in the Championship, 23 points behind Jorge Martin.
MotoGP will arrive at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli next weekend, one of Bagnaia's home tracks. In the premier class, Bagnaia has two race wins and two further podiums in Misano. With the misery of Aragon behind him the two-time MotoGP Champion will look to fight back at home.
