Exclusive: Dovizioso talks you round a lap of the Red Bull Ring

Ducati have their biggest chance yet of securing the first post-Casey Stoner era MotoGP victory at this weekend’s Austrian MotoGP round after being head and shoulders above the opposition in testing.

Andreas Dovizioso and Iannone will be charged with bringing home what could be a one-two on Sunday at the Red Bull Ring, so we sat down with the former and talked through a lap of the circuit.

“The first word that comes in my mind when I think at the Red Bull Ring is WOW! I like this track. It’s fun to ride and different from many other venues. Also the location is special as it is surrounded by the mountains. The layout of the track suits the Desmosedici, because there is a strong acceleration from the lower rpm so we can use all our acceleration,” he told bikesportnews.com.

“There is some hard braking and it’s a fast track thanks also to four short straights, some long flowing corners and a fast chicane, where we can use the power of our bike at the best. I’m really happy with the feeling and I enjoying riding there.”

So, here we go:

Turn 1

It’s a very difficult corner not only because it is uphill. You need to find the best compromise between braking hard and releasing the brakes as soon as possible so that bike can flow. We do this corner in second gear.

Straight – Turn 2 – Turn 3

Then there is a long straight that we do in sixth gear before facing a long corner with a very hard braking. Here we downshift from the sixth to the first gear. It is a very difficult right-hand hairpin turn followed by another down hill straight where we use all the gears till the sixth and another demanding hard braking at…

Turn 4

A downhill corner where the inclination increases as you proceed. Here it’s important that you always stay within the limit otherwise it’s easy to go wide.

Turn 5

A long double right-hand corner where you slide a lot. Here we even put two gears and we open almost full throttle before changing direction, downshifting two gears. Being careful is a must because the banking is negative and the front tends to close.

Turn 6-7

Two downhill left-hand corners that you keep connected on the same line.

Turn 8

A very fast chicane that we do sliding before putting in succession the second, the third, the fourth and we open all the throttle to tackle the uphill.

Turn 9

The penultimate hard braking is challenging and fun because it’s blind, we enter sliding and then we close the line, getting ready for the last braking.

Turn 10

Here we brake on the kerb because there is not so much grip with a compression in the last corner so you need to use all the track as much as possible.
