Ai Ogura exceeded everyone's expectations during his MotoGP debut, but he remained as modest as ever.
MotoGP Rookie, Ai Ogura, showed his superstar potential this weekend in his premier class debut at the Thai Grand Prix.
The Japanese rider finished fourth in the Sprint Race and was fifth in the Grand Prix. Ogura was modest on Sunday afternoon after completing his debut race, but he described it as 'a fantastic experience'.
"The feeling is really nice," Ogura told TNT Sports.
"Today's race [Sunday's Grand Prix] was just like yesterday [Saturday's Sprint Race]. I was able to learn from one of the big names [Francesco Bagnaia], it has been a fantastic experience.
During the Sprint Race on Saturday Ogura was able to follow two-time MotoGP Champion, Francesco Bagnaia. For Ogura it was a case of the student learning from the master as he picked up some helpful information from watching the Italian.
"That was really helpful for me for today's main race," Ogura said.
"On Saturday I learned from Pecco how to be smooth, which was really important for the main race. That was a good point from today."
As a rookie, expectations are usually low for their debut in MotoGP, but Ogura exceeded everyone's expectations, even his own.
"It was a lot better than expected, I have just been getting used to the bike little by little," he explained.
"Every session this weekend I have just been trying to handle everything. Somehow these results have shown up and the team are really happy, it was a great weekend."
Ogura was asked about his results and where he believes he has improved since first riding a MotoGP machine in November.
"I did what the team asked me to do," he stated.
"The start is not about the bike, it is about the rider's feeling, my good point was still there so let's keep working like this.
"It is hard to find one area where I really improved, I just improved everywhere. I tried to be good on the brakes, in the middle of the corner, on the exit, all the small details everywhere."
