'I don't have the words...' - Raul Fernandez reacts to his first Grand Prix victory

Gold & Goose

Raul Fernandez was able to claim his first MotoGP victory for Trackhouse Racing at the Australian Grand Prix.

The Australian Grand Prix had been a strong weekend for Raul Fernandez and the Trackhouse Racing squad as the Spaniard had been competitive from the word go.

Fernandez started the weekend on Friday in 11th place in Free Practice One, before ending the day in second place in the afternoon Practice session.

Saturday went even better for the Spanish rider, Fernandez qualified in fourth place on the grid for the satellite Aprilia squad. After featuring on the Sprint Race podium at the Indonesian Grand Prix, the Spaniard claimed another podium at Phillip Island with a second place in the Sprint Race.

The 24-year-old went into Sunday's race as the favourite, as Marco Bezzecchi had to take a double long lap penalty, and was able to convert the expectations as he claimed his first Grand Prix victory.

"No, no, this is something that I had always done with my father and my brother, when I made it to the grid I felt comfortable and relaxed," Fernandez told TNT Sports.

"It is not the first time I have had this feeling, so it is not the reason that I won. It is true that the race was quite difficult, because to be honest, at the beginning of the race, I thought the possibility of having a podium was realistic.

"To get a victory, I did not believe in it when I was on the grid. The moment I started to believe it was possible was when I overtook Pedro [Acosta], and Marco [Bezzecchi] had his long lap. I started to close the gap [to Acosta] and then I said 'ok, maybe today is the day'.

"I tried to be relaxed on the bike, and that is all I tried to do, and it is what I did, I don't have the words."

"Yesterday, I made a mistake... it was a mistake I learned from..."

In the Sprint Race, Fernandez finished in second place and could not challenge Marco Bezzecchi as he had burnt out his tyres whilst trying to push at the beginning of the race.

The Trackhouse Racing rider ended up holding back at the start of the Grand Prix, and after the race, believed he could have pushed more and saved too much tyre.

"Yesterday, I made a mistake at the beginning of the race, and maybe I pushed too much," he explained.

"It was a mistake that I learned from. When I saw that I was second and Marco [Bezzecchi] was pushing, I was warming up my tyres, not panicking, and had the flow. If I pushed, I think I had a little bit more, but I was trying to save my tyres for the last part of the race. Which is what I did.

"I think the key to our weekend was that we worked so well on Friday, which helped me a lot. Basically, we need to understand how we did the last two GPs on Fridays and copy and paste them in the future. This is what I want to learn."
