Marc Marquez 'would have jeopardised his career' if he returned after the Indonesian GP

Gold & Goose

MotoGP Medical Director, Dr Angel Charte, has discussed Marc Marquez's decision to sit out the remainder of the season.

If Marc Marquez had not decided to sit out the remainder of the 2025 MotoGP season, MotoGP Medical Director Dr Angel Charte believes he would have 'jeopardised' his career.

At the Indonesian Grand Prix, Marquez suffered a complicated right shoulder injury when he was involved in an opening lap incident with Marco Bezzecchi, a week after he secured the 2025 MotoGP title.

After the incident at Round 18 of the 2025 season, it was deemed by doctors in Madrid that Marquez did not need surgery, but a week later, the decision was changed, and Marquez underwent surgery.

The surgery on his right shoulder was successful, but the seven-time MotoGP World Champion was ruled out of the remainder of the 2025 season as he continues his recovery.

It is thought that Marquez will not be back on a MotoGP machine until pre-season testing begins in Sepang in February.

However, Dr Charte has revealed in an interview with AS that he believes Marquez would have 'jeopardised' his career if he did not sit out the remainder of the year, due to previous arm injuries.

"Marquez did what he had to do," Dr Charte said.

"It’s a serious injury because the arm is really compromised after four operations. I think he will have to come back when he is 100%.

"From a psychological point of view, he is perfectly fine because he has done his duty.

"In his case, coming back earlier would have been taking a big risk for nothing, and it wasn’t worth it. He would have jeopardised his career by coming back early."

This weekend, World Superbike rider Nicolo Bulega will replace Marquez at the Portuguese Grand Prix, and he will continue to replace the Spaniard at the Valencia Grand Prix a week later.
