MotoGP Argentina: Vierge tops tight Moto2 qualifying session

Marc VDS rider Xavi Vierge claimed his second Moto2 pole position, which saw the front row covered by just 0.012 seconds in Termas de Rio Hondo.

The Spaniard put his best time of a 1:42.726 with eight minutes to go and with the majority of riders electing to stay out and use the same tyres throughout the session, Vierge’s time went unbeaten.

It wasn’t without scares for Vierge, with the chequered flag out Marcel Schrotter posted his personal best time, which was just 0.011 seconds off the pole time. The pole time wasn’t secured yet, with Lowes lighting up the board with red indicators, the Brit came across the line just 0.001 seconds slower than Schrotter’s time, leaving the front row covered by just 0.012 seconds.

Lowes’ late lap pushed Alex Marquez down to the second row despite the former Moto3 World Champion posting his fastest lap of the session as the chequered flag was out. Tom Luthi will start from the middle of the second row with Brad Binder rounding out the top two rows.

Free practice three’s fastest man Remy Gardener could only manage seventh place and the Aussie will be joined on the third row of the grid by Qatar winner Lorenzo Baldassarri and Nico Bulega who will start from eighth and ninth respectively.

Simone Corsi Navarro will round out the top ten, just ahead of Jorge Navarro and the Italian duo of Enea Bastianini and Luca Marini. Andrea Locatelli will start from fifteenth with Iker Lecuona in fifteenth, completing the fifth row.
