Monster Energy Factory Yamaha MotoGP rider said that his set up gamble didn’t quite pay off as the Spaniard finished fifth, behind his factory Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring.

The Spaniard started on the second row and came into the race confident after showing great pace through the race simulation runs, including topping FP4.

Despite the great pace through free practice, Vinales explained that running wide after an early battle with Jack Miller, left him with work to do to try and make up the lost spots.

“I made a good start, but in turn three I got in a scrap with Jack Miller and we ran a bit wide and that opened the door for many riders,” said the 24-year-old.

“We used a completely different set-up compared to other races, trying to reduce wheel-spin, but it worked out differently than we thought because the track had changed so much compared to yesterday.

“I don’t think it was the best set-up, but we chose it thinking we could maybe solve some problems. The consumption of the tyre was very high, so I destroyed the tyre very quickly.”

When asked about his set-up gamble, Vinales said: “I was using kind of the geometry of the wet, when we use a much shorter bike.

“With grip it's great, but without grip I think we overheat the tyre a lot, it was spinning, and I destroyed the tyre. So, we're not going to go anymore to this way.

"With the normal bike the race would have been better, but sometimes we have to explore and do things that maybe we don’t like, because the result is worse, because if we don’t change, the bike will not improve.”

Despite not being able to convert his free practice pace into a result on Sunday, Vinales wasn’t too disheartened, instead looking forward to return to the scene of his first win in MotoGP in two weeks’ time.

“Anyway, I’m pleased with fifth position, because we improved a lot compared to last year and we will keep working and trying to find a way to go faster,” he said.

“This weekend was just a trial run. In Silverstone I don’t want to pay too much attention to what happened in Brno and Austria. It’s a track I really like, and I will go for it one hundred percent.”
