MotoGP Buriram: Michelin expecting all factories to run hard tyres

Michelin have said that they’re expecting all of the factory teams to use the harder rear tyre during tomorrows MotoGP race after high track temperatures caught the tyre manufacturer out in Buriram.

Currently Michelin are forced to decide what tyres they will bring at the start of the season. With it being a new venue, Michelin were forced to guess what tyres to bring. Unfortunately un-seasonably high temperatures have seen the track up to ten degrees higher than when the paddock was testing around the circuit in February.

After complaints from multiple riders about tyre life, Michelin manager Piero Taramasso said that they have studied data and spoken to teams, and they expect all of the factories to use the hard tyre tomorrow.

"The situation is not easy because the track conditions are very different from the test compared to when we came here for the test,” said Taramasso.

“When we came here for the test, track temperature was 48-49. Yesterday was 53, today was 57-58. The grip level is also much lower, so we saw the rear tyre is spinning more in a straight line, 5-6% more compared to the test.

“So the rear tyre is wearing quite quickly. Yesterday the tyre wear was quite high. We will suggest for the race is the hard one. With the hard tyre you can do a proper race, attack from the beginning to the end. The tyre wear looks good. So this is our suggestion for all the riders. Now, the soft and the medium, you can do the race, but you will have to manage because only a bit of rubber will be left.

"But it's just a performance problem, not safety. That’s what the allocation is what it is, we don’t take any tyres out. The riders they will decide, but again, we recommend very strongly the hard one. For us there is no reason to use the soft one.”
