MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez extended his lead atop the 2019 World Championship after a terrible mistake by his Repsol Honda team-mate Jorge Lorenzo took out the Spaniard’s four biggest rivals for the victory on the second lap at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Starting from the middle of the front row, Marquez got a good start, but it was Andrea Dovizioso who took the holeshot from the World Champion. Dovizoso led the opening lap from Marquez, Maverick Vinales, Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi.
Coming out of turn nine, Dovizioso had a wobble, allowing Marquez to move under the Ducati into the lead at turn ten. At the same moment as Marquez took the lead, Lorenzo attempted to move under Vinales into turn three. The former World Champion lost the front end of his RC213V, torpedoing into the side of Dovizioso. Vinales was collected by the Desmosedici of Dovizioso, with Rossi also a victim after sitting up to avoid the crash, taking four of the front five out.
With over two seconds in his pocket after just two laps, Marquez continued to extend his lead at the front of the race from Petrucci, Rins and Quartararo.
As Marquez continued to extend his lead, both Rins and Quartararo were being held up by the power of the GP19 under the Italian, unable to capitalise on their corner speed and not having enough power to out drag down the straights.
Marquez managed his gap when it was just over five seconds, eventually bringing his factory Honda home 2.6 seconds clear of Fabio Quartararo, who managed to get past and hold off Danilo Petrucci for his first MotoGP podium, with Petrucci backing up his win last time out with another podium.
Alex Rins was fourth on his GSX-RR after fighting through after a mistake when attempting to pass Petrucci, just ahead of the Jack Miller, with the second Ecstar GSX-RR of Joan Mir just behind in sixth place.
Pol Espargaro brought his Red Bull KTM home in seventh place, ahead of Taka Nakagami and Tito Rabat. Johann Zarco rounded out the top ten on his factory KTM.
Andrea Iannone was eleventh on his Aprilia with Miguel Oliveira and Sylvain Guintoli rounding out the finishers in thirteenth place.
