MotoGP Indy: Broken hand rules out Hayden; Spies will race

Ducati's Nicky Hayden has been ruled out of tomorrow's Indianpolis MotoGP round after a monster highside in qualifying saw him knocked out and break two bones in his hand.

The American rider was given medical attention at the track and then transferred to the Indianapolis Methodist Hospital where X-rays and CAT scans revealed no head injuries but fractures to two metacarpals in his right hand. It is likely he will remain in hospital overnight.

Ben Spies also suffered a big crash on the same piece of tarmac and was also taken to the same hospital but discharged with minor injuries.

"My shoulder is really sore after that crash, maybe some torn ligaments so it’s pretty painful. I’m getting some treatment and we’ll see how it is tomorrow. It’s frustrating as we’ve been going really well all weekend and I’ve been feeling really confident with the bike, I think we could have been on pole. The track surface is pretty tricky at the end there, it seems to have caught a few people today," he said.
