MotoGP Indy: Stoner heads the field into qualifying

Repsol Honda's Casey Stoner has set the quickest lap in the final MotoGP free practice session today at Indianapolis but was kept honest through the whole 45 minutes by Yamaha's Ben Spies who is only a tenth slower than the 2007 world champion.

Stoner lapped in 1'39.538, which is the fastest ever lap of the place, with Spies on a 1'39.670 which is a further second faster than the times from yesterday as more and more rubber is laid on the new surface at Indianapolis. Dani Pedrosa set the third fastest time on a 1'40.301, three-quarters of a second slower than his team-mate with a late lap from Marco Simoncelli bagging fourth place.

Andrea Dovizioso, who is more than likely dicing with Simoncelli for the third HRC bike in 2012, is only 0.025s behind his fellow Italian with Monster Yamaha's Colin Edwards in sixth just under a second off the pace.

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo hasn't got himself dialled in to the circuit, finishing down in seventh and just one place ahead of former team-mate Valentino Rossi on the Marlboro Ducati. Randy De Puniet and Alvaro Bautista round out the top ten.

Nicky Hayden is slowly sliding down the order in 11th while Briton Cal Crutchlow is going in the opposite direction, moving up to 12th place and upping his pace.
