MotoGP Misano: Alex Lowes a lot more confident after day one

Alex Lowes ended the first day at Misano feeling a lot more confident as he admitted he is happy with his progress.

A week on from his MotoGP debut at Silverstone, Lowes ended the day in 17th position and 1.4s slower than his Monster Yamaha team-mate Pol Espargaro who dipped under the lap record to top the timesheets at the end of the opening day.

And he believes there is still a lot more to come after he stayed out on old rubber during the second session as he continues to get to grips with Bradley Smith’s machine this weekend. “I was quite happy at the end of the session, I didn’t use a new tyre, I used the same rear tyre for the whole session,” he said.

“For the first day around here on the GP bike I’m quite happy with it because the track is short, it’s a bit more technical than Silverstone in some ways because it’s a lot slower, its flat so it’s a bit more difficult to get a feeling on the front.

“I’m still at the stage where I’m taking chunks off my lap time, and my best lap was on something like lap 18 I was just getting a bit quicker and a bit quicker and learning but I enjoyed it, it’s great.”

Lowes believes he has made big improvements in the space of just a week, and having reviewed TV footage of his riding he is happy with how he looks and feels on the bike.

“I watched a little bit of the session back and I think in one week I’ve done quite a good job, my style looks a bit better on the bike. I’ve still got a long way to go, I’m leaning a bit much but that’s a trait I’ve picked up riding a superbike but I look a lot better on the bike and I feel a lot better on the bike in terms of my position so I’m quite happy with how much I’ve improved in such a short space. I’ve a better understanding of how to get a lap time as well.

Lowes ran a nine lap stint in today’s session and is now planning a longer run tomorrow morning if all feels well with his bike. “My plan is if I feel okay in the morning I’ll try and stay out for the full session in FP4 just to try and get some good understanding of the conditions.

“I feel a lot less tense on the bike. At Silverstone I was a bit tense, had a bit of arm pump but here I feel a lot more relaxed, a lot better so I’m a lot more confident over the distance.”
