Gaviota GasGas Aspar’s Izan Guevara led the way in Saturday’s morning FP3 session as the Moto3 challenger set a solo stunner.

Despite the Spaniard’s 1’41.459 lap proving a slipstream was far from required around the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli the usual late-session chaos disrupted the action. Leopard’s Dennis Foggia and Angeluss MTA’s Stefano Nepa completed the top three with Friday’s hero securing his Q2 place thanks to his FP2 time.

The lightweight action fired up with Red Bull KTM’s Jaume Masia sitting up in the path of oncoming riders much to the displeasure of those behind him. CFMoto’s Carlos Tatay and CIP Green Power’s Kaito Toba instantly improved on their Friday times by rising to the top of the FP3 standings, Rivacold Snipers’ Andrea Migno sitting third in the session but so far adrift of promotion overall. Tech3’s Deniz Öncü began to challenge after ten minutes on track until the PruestelGP rider struck back, Aspar’s Izan Guevara joining the early fight with his fifth lap.

Sergio Garcia saved a major moment after his GasGas Aspar took a trip across the kerbs, Tatay continuing to lead and the highest placed improver, from fifth overall.

Nepa hit the top at the halfway stage with a 1’41.773 effort, the first under the 1’42 marker until Guevara followed suit. The pair now sitting second and third in the combined standings ahead of the late-session shootout.

Guevara continued his climb as he bettered overall next time around, 1’41.459 the benchmark for the final 14 minutes with the Aspar man riding solo on the 4.2km layout.

With the majority of the pack in the pits ahead of the final push, VisionTrack’s Scott Ogden sat as gatekeeper to direct promotion with a 1’42.454. His teammate Josh Whatley - who celebrated his 17th birthday on Friday - circulating in 29th.

Three minutes to go and the pack rolled out, slowly, with large bunches of riders waiting off line to catch the questionably-needed slipstream, the penalties surely incoming.

The tactics failed to be successful for many as five of the promotion zone secured their Q2 place with Friday’s times - including Foggia and John McPhee. Sterilgarda Husqvarna teammate Ayumu Sasaki, Masia and Migno the highest of the final movers in fourth to sixth with Daniel Holgado and Ryusei Yamanaka also securing their place at the flag. Ogden denied the promotion by less than a tenth, alongside fellow rookie David Muñoz, and facing the Q1 fight.
