Misano stages the grand finale of the 2022 FIM Enel MotoE World Cup this weekend, with just two contenders remaining on the Riviera di Rimini.
The final two races of this season’s MotoE World Cup are about to get underway, and as the ePaddock heads for Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli there remains just two contenders for the crown. Dynavolt Intact’s Dominique Aegerter arrives as the points leader on 194, with LCR’s challenger Eric Granado on 176.5 – that’s just 17.5 points between the two as the final 50 are put in play.
The duo will both want to forget a few bad memories from last time the Cup was on the line on the Riviera di Rimini, but there’s plenty to celebrate for each of them in 2022 so far. Aegerter has been off the podium only twice in ten races, compared to Granado’s three. But the Brazilian has won exactly half of the contests so far this year – the gap is 17.5 and not less given that pesky half measure awarded in the second showdown at Assen where the race was shortened and half points conferred. That in itself could make the maths very interesting this weekend.
So what about Misano? Aegerter and his 2021 rival for the crown, Jordi Torres (Pons Racing 40) are the only two riders who have won at the track who aren’t named Matteo Ferrari (Felo Gresini). The 2019 Cup winner – now known as the King of Misano – has won a staggering five of the seven races held at the track, so while he may be out of the running for the 2022 crown he could still have a huge say in the outcome given his record at the venue. Mattia Casadei (Ongette SIC58 Squadra Corse) has been incredibly quick all season too, and Miquel Pons (LCR) is on a podium roll.
In all, it may seem an uphill battle for Granado as Aegerter arrives knowing the venue so well and with a MotoE win here under his belt, but the Brazilian has won the last three and put together his best campaign yet, swatting away the pressure. Can the Swiss rider do the same as the grand finale arrives, with Granado’s winning streak already having nearly halved a once 34-point gap?
