MOTOGP OFF-SEASON: GOSSIP, RUMOUR AND INTRIGUE

Even though Kawasaki still can't be arsed to tell anyone they've taken their ball home and won't be playing in MotoGP next year, I'm prepared to lay odds that Jorge 'Aspar' Martinez's phone has been very busy in recent days.

The Spaniard, whose team pretty-much rules 125 and 250 racing, had already tried to put a third Kawasaki on the 2009 MotoGP grid but conflicts with riders and sponsors meant it never happened. Now, he is probably in a perfect position to take Team Green off, erm, Team Green's hands.

It is believed the manufacturer is contracted to race until 2011, so would have to pay Dorna an awful lot of money to get out of it. They have already spend millions on infrastructure so could do worse than hand the whole thing over to Martinez, who would then have to cover the day-to-day running costs out of sponsorship funds – mostly Monster drinks, who are already signed up for this year. Not rocket science, is it?

If the above doesn't happen, John Hopkins and Marco Melandri are without rides. There has been some speculation that Hopper could be moved into the Tech3 Yamaha seat currently occupied by Colin Edwards. The Texas Tornado has a long and happy relationship with the recently-departed Michelin, whereas Hopper and his Monster money get on with Bridgestone quite well, thanks.

I really hope this is utter bollocks as the series, in any form, needs characters like Edwards who choose not to toe the company line from time to time and call it as they see it.

And James Toseland needs an experienced team-mate like Edwards in order to progress, not a walking ego like Hopkins who goes off the radar about once every five seconds and is prone to hissy fits of the very worst sort.

Loris Capriossi's manager has said he is more than confident Suzuki will not follow Kawasaki out of MotoGP and that both the Italian and team-mate Chris Vermeulen will be on the grid later on this year.

On the Italian side of the series, it looks now like Nico Canepa will not be shifted from the Pramac team to the Onde200 squad even though the former have lost their Alice sponsorship. According to Canepa's management team, he will remain with Pramac but may run under different livery to team-mate Mika Kallio depending on new sponsors. Whether that livery could be Grupo Francisco Hernando (Onde2000) is a different matter altogether...

According to reports in Australia, Casey Stoner is 99 per cent certain to be involved in the Sepang MotoGP tests but may not be at full fitness his recovery from a bone-graft operation to repair his busted scaphoid is taking longer than first thought.

However, the Desmosedici GP9 looks like it doesn't need an awful lot of extra development as Stoner and new team-mate Nicky Hayden were both fastest on two different days at the post-race tests in Valencia.

As far as I'm aware, Donington Park still hasn't got planning permission for the massive alterations it is proposing in order to host F1 in 2010 - if F1 still exists in 2010. The circuit has said it has plans to make entry into the place an all-public transport affair by laying on buses to ease traffic congestion. They could, of course, get some traffic marshals who don't stand about smoking and waving their hands in random directions while texting girls into whose pants they haven't a chance of getting.

Silverstone is still, apparently, making very big noises about hosting MotoGP in 2010 as Donington's contract runs out this year. Hmmm. For those of you who haven't been to a BSB round at Silverstone, let me explain. It's a big, flat place from where you can watch about 10 yards of action from behind very high wire fences, which may as well be topped with razor wire, 20 yards back from the track edge. It may be a wonderful place to watch F1 cars not overtake, but for bikes it is desperate.
