MotoGP Silverstone: ‘Austria win would be a dream’ - Vinales

Maverick Viñales is riding the wave at Aprilia after a second consecutive podium at Silverstone on Sunday.

Despite a poor start from the front row, thanks to an issue with the holeshot device, which saw Viñales running sixth as the opening lap concluded, the number 12 enjoyed a mid-race battle with Jorge Martin before eventually overhauling the Pramac Ducati for the final eight laps.

Late-race pace saw his Aprilia ignite on the wheels of Jack Miller before the factory Desmosedici was also dispatched and a dramatic conclusion awaited. Having looked like a clear winner in the closing stages, Ducati Lenovo’s Pecco Bagnaia quickly came under fire from the ‘TopGun’ with the two duelling it out for the electrifying final two laps before Viñales settled for second at the flag.

“I’m very pleased,” Viñales confirmed after the race. “I’m very pleased because two podiums in a row with the bike is very important for us.

“We work well through all the weekend. We need to learn from this weekend, I learned a lot in the race where and what we need to improve. So basically, I’m so happy. I couldn’t wait to be back, work and try to do the next step.

“I try everything,” he said of his battle with eventual winner Bagnaia. “I pass him but he pass me back and then in turn one I have a little moment going into the corner so I lose all the space. Then I just closed the door for Jack, just closing all the time the door. But overall you know we must be happy.

“We must be happy because it’s not easy, this is MotoGP and we are achieving the really good results. Two podiums in a row.

“I don’t see that this is the proof. We need to continue improving, we need to continue working and that’s the way. Every time I go on the bike I feel better and there is tracks [coming] now where I feel very strong.”

With the Spaniard’s recent results counting down from running an impressive fourth behind teammate Aleix Espargaro at Sachsenring - before a technical issue curtailed his race - to third at Assen and second at Silverstone, could Austria prove the dream hunting ground for his maiden victory on the RS-GP? It would certainly be fitting after last season’s controversial Styrian race which brought the earlier-than-expected split from Yamaha.

“I think it’s a dream!” he admitted on the task awaiting him in a fortnight’s time. “If we accomplish the objective in Austria it’s going to be a really good dream because at the end, in Austria I had things happen but this is on the past. I’m really concentrated in the present, but I will have an extra motivation for sure.

“I’m enjoying everything. I feel really good inside the team. Aprilia is a great factory and they deserve it, so I go for it.”
