MotoGP Valencia: Stoner fires broadside at 'joke championship'

Departing MotoGP star Casey Stoner has fired another broadside at Dorna bosses, saying the amount of races it holds in Spain makes the championship into a European series.

The Repsol Honda man, who will race for the last time on Sunday, is retiring because he hates the politics that go with the sport's blue riband class and took the opportunity to have one last pop before he goes, comparing MotoGP to the Aussie V8 car series he may take part in.

"It's not the same. For instance, in V8s to get points you need to use a co-driver outside of the championship so it cannot be taken so seriously. [MotoGP] is a very professional championship that's a joke in my opinion, with the way it is handled. You know, we go to four friggin' Spanish races, almost five basically with Portugal. It's a European championship not a world championship for one. There are so many other things," said Stoner, speaking at Valencia.

"It shouldn't be races in 18 countries but not four races in one country. I think that is overstepping the mark and, like I said, Portugal is just across the border. There are too many in too close quarters. I think it needs to branch out more like it used to be."
