Opinion: Why the 2025 MotoGP title is Marc Marquez's for the taking

Gold & Goose

Here is why we believe the 2025 MotoGP Championship could be Marc Marquez's best chance to win a ninth title...

Say what you like about Marc Marquez but he's a natural winner. Since arriving in the premier class of motorcycle racing Marquez has been near unbeatable when he has been healthy.

Marquez has won six MotoGP titles so far in his 12-year MotoGP career. But in recent years he has been plagued by drastic injury issues. However, things are looking up for the 31-year-old and he will be targeting his next title in 2025.

During Marquez's MotoGP career, he has spent 11 years with Honda and one year with Ducati, so far. In year 13 he will join the factory Ducati squad and will wear the now famous Ducati red. This is our first factor...

Marc Marquez, the factory Ducati rider...

If you look back to the end of the 2019 season when Marquez had just won his eighth World Championship, would you have thought that six years later he would be riding for the factory Ducati squad?

Chances are you would not have even considered it since his relationship with Honda was so strong. However, that seemingly unbreakable relationship did break down after two winless seasons in 2022 and 2023.

The 2024 season saw Marquez jump on a 2023 Ducati at Gresini Racing, which in itself was a shock. During his time with Gresini Marquez won three Grands Prix, a Sprint Race and took 15 further podiums in Grands Prix and Sprints. All of which were special achievements for Marquez and Gresini.

But in 2025 he will receive more support and most importantly a brand new, shiny 2025 factory specification Ducati. Throughout the last three years, the factory-spec Ducati's have been the dominant force in MotoGP. Francesco Bagnaia won the 2022 and 2023 titles and Jorge Martin took the 2024 title on the latest bike from the Italian manufacturer.

Considering how quickly Marquez adapted to the old Ducati, it seems likely that he will be just fine when it comes to getting used to his latest bike. But it seems his biggest threat could be from within his new team's garage...

Title Rivals:

The 2025 MotoGP field has seen a big shake-up in terms of who the top riders will be riding for. Most notably the new Champion, Martin, who has made his way to Aprilia Racing.

The likes of Marco Bezzecchi and Enea Bastianini have also moved manufacturers as the Italians have moved to Aprilia and KTM.

Depending on the performance of the 2025 Aprilia RS-GP and KTM RC16 these three riders may be out of the running.

So, Marquez is on the best bike, and the majority of his rivals have moved to weaker manufacturers. The only realistic rival that Marquez would have is his new teammate, Francesco Bagnaia.

Putting Bagnaia and Marquez inside a garage together seems like a ridiculous decision from Ducati. But as long as they are winning titles it is unlikely that Ducati will care if their riders are getting along.

In the past, we have seen the likes of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo share a garage for seven years. During this time they won a total of four titles between them, even though they did not get along they still got results.

At this moment in time, it seems like a pretty safe bet to suggest that the 2025 title will be Marquez or Bagnaia. But why would we edge Marquez over Bagnaia? Simply it is because Marquez is more aggressive.

Throughout his career, Marquez has never given an inch and has become known for his aggressive rider. On the other hand, the Ducati bosses believe Bagnaia lost the 2024 title as he was not aggressive enough. Unless Bagnaia becomes more willing to go toe to toe in 2025, it seems likely that Marquez would beat him on equal machinery in a head-to-head.

Marquez's determination:

Since his near career-ending injury in 2020, Marquez has thought about retiring on multiple occasions. But the Spaniard never committed to retiring as his love for motorbike racing returned in 2024 when he got on a Ducati.

Many people have suggested that Marquez should have retired when he was at his lowest. But from what we know about Marquez he would want nothing more in 2025 than to prove his critics wrong by winning the MotoGP World Championship.

Obviously, there is a chance that Marquez's determination takes him too far and that he does more harm than good. But either way, we believe we are in for a cracking 2025 season!
