Jorge Prado (Red Bull KTM) raced to the win in the MX2 qualification moto at the MXGP of Portugal at Agueda today.

The Spanish teenager – who trails his Latvian team-mate Pauls Jonass by 28 points in the championship – led every lap to record a comprehensive win from Denmark’s Thomas Kjer Olsen (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) and young Aussie Jed Beaton (F&H Kawasaki).

Defending champion Jonass, who won the first six races of the season before coming unstuck in Italy last weekend, started well and was holding second until an early mistake cost him three positions. He ended the 20-minute plus two lap race in fourth after resisting late pressure from Britain’s Ben Watson (Kemea Yamaha).

Behind Watson it was South African Calvin Vlaanderen (Team HRC) who was first Honda home from Italy’s Michele Cervellin (Martin Racing Honda), Belgian Brent Van Doninck (8Biano Husqvarna), Sweden’s Alvin Ostlund (SM Action Yamaha) and Russian Vsevolod Brylyakov (Kemea Yamaha).

Watson apart, the Brits had a tough time. Adam Sterry (F&H Kawasaki) got off to a great start and was sixth after the opening lap before dropping it on lap two and slipping back to 19th. Another crash put him further down the field but he didn’t give up and fought through to 19th at the flag.

Conrad Mewse (Hitachi ASA KTM UK) – who’s currently fifth in the championship – gated mid-pack and struggled to move forward, ending the race one place ahead of Sterry in 18th.

Prado will now get the all-important first gate pick for tomorrow’s two point-paying motos.
