MXGP Redsand: Barr takes EMX250 race two win

REVO Husqvarna UK celebrated its second EMX250 race win of the weekend at Redsand in Spain today but after Mel Pocock’s heroics yesterday it was time for his team-mate Martin Barr to take centre stage.

The 30-year-old Irishman – who crashed at the start of yesterday’s race and was forced to come from the back to 10th – gated in the top 10 and in his usual forceful style immediately started making passes.

By lap four he was on the rear wheel of France’s Pierre Goupillon (Kawasaki) and he shadowed him for a further seven laps before making a late pass and extending his advantage to four seconds at the flag.

Italian Giuseppe Tropepe (Yamaha) took third from the French pairing of Tom Vialle (KTM) and Brian Moreau (Kawasaki).

After struggling out of the gate, Pocock had a much tougher race today and had to come from outside the top 15 to ninth, one place behind fellow Brit Steven Clarke (Carglass Honda) who finished yesterday’s race in fourth.

Following his 11th-placed finish yesterday, Josh Spinks (M Smith KTM) took 18th today but Liam Knight (Pope KTM) finished out of the points in 29th.

After his bike blew up on the start line yesterday, James Dunn (GL12 Racing KTM) kept the flag flying for two-strokes with 15th.

Goupillon takes a two-point lead over Vialle to Portugal in three week’s time with Pocock a further three points behind and just one point ahead of fourth-placed Barr.

In EMX300 Holland’s Mike Kras (GL12 Racing KTM) repeated yesterday’s win to open up a four-point lead at the top of the standings from Belgium’s Greg Smets (KTM).

Kras, the 2016 champion, led every lap and beat Smets into second by almost six seconds. Brad Anderson (Verde Substance KTM) was third ahead of local hero Alonso Sanchez Osuna (TM) with Andero Lusbo (Husqvarna) from Estonia in fifth.

Anderson, the defending champion, is now third in the title chase and lies 15 points behind Kras with five rounds to go. Round three will be held in Russia on May 1.
