MXGP Redsand: Cairoli re-takes series lead

Reigning champion Tony Cairoli (Red Bull KTM) took a double win and regained the MXGP series lead at round three of the FIM Motocross World Championship at Redsand in Spain today.

The 32-year-old Sicilian, who’s going for a record-equalling 10th world title this season, was in imperious form in the deep Spanish sand as he put his 23-year-old team-mate and main championship rival Jeffrey Herlings firmly in his place.

“I’m really happy,” said Cairoli at the end of race two. “Another good moto. I had a little bit of trouble with some lappers so Jeffrey came a little bit closer but my condition is good and we make two good races. In the first moto I didn’t get the start but I came back very good.”

It was 2015 champion Romain Febvre (Monster Energy Yamaha) who holeshot the opening 30-minute plus two lap race from 2016 champion Tim Gajser (Team HRC) and the Frenchman led in the early stages until Cairoli hit the front on lap eight.

Herlings didn’t get a great start but the Dutchman kept pushing up the leaderboard. Back in sixth after the first lap, he was forced to bide his time and by the end of lap five had only picked up two positions but at half-distance he took third from Belgium’s Clement Desalle and began to apply pressure to Febvre.

With just minutes left on the clock he moved through into second but by this point Cairoli was too far down the track and eventually won by over four-and-a-half seconds. Febvre held on for third from Desalle whose fellow Belgian and team-mate Julien Lieber rounded out the top five.

UK hopes suffered a body blow in the warm-up session when Max Anstie (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) went over the bars and withdrew from the GP on medical advice and Shaun Simpson (Wilvo Yamaha) went out at half-distance leaving Ireland’s Graeme Irwin (ASA Hitachi KTM UK) as our best performing rider in 16th.

Cairoli holeshot race two – his fifth from six starts – as Herlings went down with Simpson but France’s Gautier Paulin (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) took the lead and held it for five laps before Cairoli found a way past.

Herlings was stringing together a series of passes and by the end of the opening lap was already up to ninth as he carved his way back through the field. By lap four he was fifth and just before half-distance he caught and passed Desalle for third.

With six laps to go he went past Paulin and set off after Cairoli but despite putting in the fastest lap of the race with two to go the gap was too big and he crossed the line just under two seconds behind.

Paulin took third from Desalle whose fourth-place finish earned him the third step of the podium ahead of Febvre and Paulin with Gajser continuing to build on his comeback from injury in sixth.

Simpson picked up seven points in 14th but Irwin failed to score with a second race 24th.

The championship now takes a two-week break before travelling to Trentino in Italy.
