MXGP Valkenswaard: Qualifying race disaster for Herlings

Fan favourite Jeffrey Herlings’ hopes of repeating his MXGP class win at the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Argentina two weeks ago took a huge hit in the qualification race at round two of the series in Valkenswaard, Holland, today.

Herlings (Red Bull KTM) is widely-regarded as the best sand rider in the world but an early crash when his back end stepped out while he led the 20-minute plus two lap race forced him to pit to have his front wheel replaced.

Rejoining the track all the way back in 35th out of 39 riders, it’s testament to his amazing skills in the soft stuff that he managed to carve his way through the field to 19th at the flag but with a poor gate pick for tomorrow’s points-paying races his chances of taking a home victory are greatly diminished.

Instead, Jeremy Van Horebeek (Monster Energy Yamaha) will go to the gate first after claiming a seven-second victory in super-tough conditions with temperatures plummeting to -2ºC. The Belgian took a huge holeshot and despite losing the lead within a few turns he was perfectly placed to inherit the lead when Herlings crashed.

Frenchman Gautier Paulin (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna), who won in the deep Dutch sand in 2017, was second from Slovenia’s 2016 world champion Tim Gajser (Team Honda HRC) who showed no ill-effects from the broken jaw he sustained last month in Mantova that forced him to miss round one.

Defending champion Tony Cairoli (Red Bull KTM) showed his usual fast and consistent form for fourth from his Dutch team-mate Glenn Coldenhoff with Swiss star Jeremy Seewer (Wilvo Yamaha) – last year’s MX2 vice-champion – a strong sixth.

Belgium’s Clement Desalle (Monster Energy Kawasaki) was seventh from Russian Evgeny Bobryshev (BOS Suzuki), best Brit Tommy Searle (Bike It DRT Kawasaki) and German Max Nagl (TM Racing Factory Team).

After running in the top five for the first couple of laps, Scot Shaun Simpson (Wilvo Yamaha) dropped back to 13th, one place ahead of Max Anstie (Rockstar Energy Husqvarna) who never recovered from a poor start. Northern Ireland’s Graeme Irwin (ASA Hitachi KTM UK) also started badly and could only get up to 24th at the flag.
