BMW S1000 range gets some 2017 upgrades

Like most of the manufacturers, BMW looks like it’s been doing some housekeeping across its range for next year, spurred on by Euro IV emissions regs.

So the S1000RR superbike, S1000R hyper-naked and S1000XR sporty adventure bike are all getting a hit of the upgrade stick, to varying effect.

Taking the RR first, because we is a supersports outfit and loves our track bikes, the bad news is that it’s not got any more power, sticking at 199bhp. No real tragedy of course – it’s an amazing powerplant as it is, and so long as the Euro IV emissions compliance hasn’t hobbled it anywhere, we’re still keeping it on our xmas list.

Motor aside, the RR gets a software update to its riding modes, and a new Dynamic Traction Control setup with banking sensors. The Riding Modes Pro option gives you pitlane speed limiters, launch control and a ‘Slick’ riding mode. The ABS now comes with an optional ‘Pro’ setup, adding leaning anti-lock brakes to the mix. Finally, the RR now comes as standard as a single seater, but you can spec pillion seat and pegs from the factory if you so wish.

The S1000 R was properly crackers when it first appeared, but now some of the competition has caught up a bit (we’re looking at you KTM). BMW has thus fiddled with the motor, and found an extra 5bhp down the back of the proverbial sofa. It also drops 2kg of mass – all good. There’s an upgrade on the riding aids suite, and you can also now spec the up- and down-quickshifter option that is available on the RR and XR. Got all that?

Finally, the daftest adventure bike of them all, the S1000XR also gets more power, again up to 165bhp from 160 before. Where will it all end?
