Ducati's 939 Supersport revealed at Intermot Show

We’re an egalitarian bunch here at BSN – and we’re all for getting as many folk as possible out, hooning sportsbikes round the countryside. So we’re giving Ducati a big old hand for launching this new Supersport 939 – the worst-kept secret at Intermot this year.

The plan is simple – make a lightweight, medium-powered sports bike that’s more at home on the twisty back roads of Olde England than it is thrashing round the high-end racetracks of the world. Rather like the old 900 SS Supersports of old in fact. So you get 113bhp from the 8-valve Testastretta, 937cc engine that comes from the Hypermotard 939. That’s about the same as an asthmatic 600cc four from the last decade – but it’s in a nice light chassis. 184kg dry is the claim – which works out at 210kg ready to ride. Or about 10kg more than the new 192bhp Fireblade SP. Ah.

So, it’ll definitely be a bit tamer than the current crop of megasports weapons. But that’s no bad thing, and, of course, if you really need a superbike to rule them all, the Ducati dealership will be very glad to take your cash for a 1299 Panigale thank you very much…

The 939SS comes in base and ‘S’ versions, with the posh one wearing Ohlins and suspension jewellery, rather than the Sachs/Marzocchi fare on the working-class version. But the rest of the spec is largely the same.
