Saturday’s timed practice on the drying track was uneventful, Ben Johnson leading the times throughout the session with a late charge from Alex Kenchington. Bruce Dunn’s high-side early in the session was heavy enough to put the Championship 2nd place man out of action for the weekend sustaining bumps and bruises that was a little too much to race with.
Saturday’s race, round 10 started with Championship leader Ben Johnson getting away last and eventually retiring at the end of lap one. Nathan Pallet stamped his authority on his first appearance in the National Championship by leading at the end of lap one only to be overpowered by Andy Sawford at the end of the second lap. Sawford extended this lead consistently through the race to win by 13 seconds from Pallet followed by Alex Kenchington and veteran rider, Darrell Higgins in fourth. Paul Lumb confirmed his NG Cup Champion status, making it nine wins from the ten rounds, with Paul McCullagh second and Mike Wilson third.
Sunday’s race, after a heavy shower in the previous race, the track soon dried, with all the riders getting away on dry tyres. Jason Davies got a hole shot away from the line, leading the pack around lap one. Ben Johnson took up the lead on the second lap but Andy Sawford was having none of this taking the lead through the first corner at the start of lap three. Nathan Pallet had a moment and went through one of the chicanes, rejoining in sixth place. By lap five, it was Sawford followed by Johnson and Kenchington with Davis being relegated to fourth. .Ben Johnson suffered mechanical problems and retired half way round the final lap to complete a miserable weekend where two DNF’s saw him slip to third in the title chase. Johnson’s retirement gifted Davis the final place on the podium. Paul Lumb continued his dominance of NG Cup with another faultless ride to take a further 25points.
Championship Standings going into final two rounds couldn’t be closer with Kenchington leading on 136, Sawford 2nd on 135, Johnson 3rd on 133 and Davis on 116 in 4th. The newly crowned NG Cup Champion Paul Lumb extended his title lead with two wins to 250 points, but second place in the standings is very close with Sian Brooks on 142 points, having scored points in every round so far, and Mike Wilson on 141 after his strong Castle Combe showing taking a third and a second respectively.
