Darley Moor round six: Weekend race preview

Darley Moor Motorcycle Road Race Championship enters its latter stages this weekend when Round 6 takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 29th August 2011 and you can guarantee there will be plenty of excitement. The circuit is open from 5.00pm on Friday and at just £5 per night for a tent or caravan, plus the cost of admission to Monday’s meeting why not take the opportunity to have a short break before the children go back to school? You can even bring the dog along, if kept on the lead.

With a total of 54 points still available before the end of the season the championship leaders still have to maintain their run of form to be sure of ‘lifting’ the title. Plenty of local racers are looking to ensure their name will be on the trophies at the final Round.

The Lightweight Championship is the closest at present, with Ben Godfrey (Long Eaton) just 7 points behind the leader, Chris Spooner (Stoke on Trent) 1 further point behind. Matt Zschiesche (Stoke on Trent) is 4th, but with a 28 point deficit to turn around.

After victory last time out Gavin Salt (Leek) is now just 8 points behind Jon Skelson (Leicester) in the Pre-Injection 600 class. Wez Pearce (Derby) holds a similar lead in the Pre 98’s(up to 500cc) Championship. After two wins at Round 5, Jamie Medhurst (Long Eaton) leads the Sound of Thunder class by 15 points from James Ford (High Peak), whilst Anthony Porter (Chesterfield) is the man to beat in the Mini Sound of Thunder class, with a 32 point advantage of Gary Dangerfield (Stonnall).

Porter could well be the first name on the Formula Darley trophy, needing just 7 points this weekend to be the first Darley Moor champion of 2011. Gary Dangerfield and Chris Spooner are his closest rivals, 48 points adrift!

Roger Golling/Rob Dean (Stafford) find themselves down in 3rd place in the Open Sidecar Championship, they will be trying to reduce the 19 point gap to the head of the table. Whilst Birmingham sidecar racers Roy Hanks and daughter, Julie Hanks-Elliott currently hold a 25 point advantage in the Formula 2 Sidecar Championship.

Another double winner at Round 5 was Richard Wardle (Stoke on Trent) who now holds a 21 point lead in the Formula 600 class, but he had to fend off a very strong challenge from Danny Smith (Rugeley) in the second race, Smith is currently 3rd in the Championship.

Wardle is also having a superb run in the Peak Cup Champion-ship, very often the first 600cc machine home, against the larger/quicker 1,000cc bikes, he is lying 3rd, 46 points behind the leader. Shane Pearson (Derby) is currently 2nd in the Peak Cup standings with a 30 point gap to overhaul. Pearson also finds himself with the same deficit, against the same racer, Jim Hodson (Wigan) in the Open Solo class.

The top 5 of the Pre 98’s (upto 1300cc) class are all local competitors; new to class Kevin Cooper (Stoke on Trent) holds a healthy 35 point lead over Jon Skelson (Leicester), who in-turn holds a 4 point advantage over Gavin Heath (Leek), Kevin Parker (Burton on Trent) another 2 points behind and Sebastian Brooke (Buxton) a further point back.

With some competitors making their annual trip to the Manx Grand Prix it may leave the door open for others to enjoy an advantage and turn the Championship standings around completely.
