EMRA round one: Weekend race report

Jackson’s scorching hat-trick

Buildbase BMW’s Lee Jackson helped get the new era at Mallory Park off to a superb start for his team boss and joint-operator of the circuit, Stuart Hicken, with a hat-trick of victories from some ultra-competitive action with his fellow Pirelli National Superstock 1000 competitor Leon Jeacock. Making a scintillating get away in the opening combined Superstock 1000 and 600 race it was Kawasaki-mounted Jeacock who scored first as he successfully held off the hard-riding Jackson to register a narrow start-to-finish victory.

Race two saw Jackson break the timing beam first each lap. But his 0.171 second victory could easily have gone the other way had a just in front at the time Jeacock not been baulked on the eighth descent of Devil’s Elbow. Jackson’s two wins in the Buildbase Superbike events were each by more comfortable margins after he kept Jeacock sufficient distance behind him to be virtually unchallenged in race one, while Jackson was never headed in race two, prevailing by 9.024 seconds, as he capitalised on Jeacock having to fight his way forward from fifth at the end of lap one. Twice third overall Daniel Stamper claimed the Superstock 600 spoils on his Kawasaki, while sixth past the chequered flag on his Yamaha Richard Wardle, and Kawasaki-mounted fourth overall Jason Brown, were the respective class runner-up in each race.

Crowe first, then Wilson

Leading the first Allcomers race when the red flags were shown for the only time during the day it took Phil Crowe until almost half distance in the six-lap re-run to regain that position and take the win on his BMW 1000 before he eventually placed fourth in race two after dropping out of the lead and falling back to fifth on lap five. Victory in that second contest went to the elbow-scraping Lee Wilson on his one litre Suzuki, while in the sprint to the line BMW 1000 pilot Mark Littler denied Aaron Brown a repeat of his earlier runner-up finish by a mere 0.001 of a second as the Nuneaton rider nevertheless enjoyed a successful debut outing on his new 899cc Ducati-Penso.

Curtis Does It Wright

Constantly pulling clear of his rivals in race one, Curtis Wright ultimately guided his Triumph 675 to two clear victories in the Supersport events after overcoming the early challenge of previous third place finisher John Lea (Triumph 675) and Kawasaki 600-powered double runner-up Jason Brown in race two.

Tyrrell on the Mark

Undefeated in 2013, reigning 125cc class champion Mark Tyrrell picked up where he left off last season taking a pair of comprehensive wins on his Honda to make the perfect start to the defence of his title. Daniel Walling was a relatively untroubled second in race one. But he had to work harder for that position in race two fending off the attention of fellow Honda 125 rider Tom Stanford who successfully eclipsed double Earlystocks class winner Nigel Lawrence at Edwina’s on lap one after being unable to find a way past the Yamaha 750 pilot throughout race one. In fifth and fourth overall Joey Thompson was twice the best Formula 125 competitor on his Aprilia, which combined with a third place result overall in the second Lightweight, Mini-Twin and Pre-Injection & Steel-Frame 600 race earned him the ‘Rider of the Day’ award. Picking his way forward each time Steve Moody was the winner of both of those mixed class races on his 600cc Honda, defeating Tim Bradley’s Lightweight Yamaha 400 in race one and Jon Skelson’s Pre-Injection Suzuki 600 in race two.

Keith and Ash level

There was little to separate Ducati 1098-mounted Keith Jaggard and 600cc Kawasaki-powered Ash Stone throughout either of the Roadstocks outings that ultimately concluded with honours even between the pair as each recorded a win and second place apiece just 0.564 and 0.558 seconds apart. Stone was a more comprehensive 5.795 seconds ahead of Jaggard in the first Rookies event as they finished fifth and sixth respectively. However, there was no stopping Oli Perry in either of the Rookies outings as he powered his Suzuki 600 to a brace of wins over the respective one litre Yamaha and Suzuki steeds of Matthew Taylor and Jonathan Panter who both registered a second and third place result from the two races.

Tony tops but then probs

Following the demise of Tony Thompson/Jack Jones’ T & J Racing 1000 outfit Andy King/Ben Hughes were left in front to take victory in the first Sidecar event on their Ireson Honda 600, albeit by just 0.186 of a second. Thompson/Jones were non-starters in race two, as Greg Lambert/Kenny Cole ultimately emerged victorious on their GLR Honda 600 with Lee Crawford/Stuart Ramsey (Yamaha 600) the next home.
