Graham 'Harry' Bird has died

Affectionately known as “Harry” to his friends multiple EMRA and Darley Moor Open Sidecar Champion Graham Bird died on 11 December 2011 at his Staffordshire home aged just 56 years young after a brave fight against cancer.

First taking to the track as a driver in 1988 Graham scored his maiden race victory at Mallory Park and maintained a strong affection for the Leicestershire circuit throughout his racing career.

Quiet and unassuming Graham was a true gentleman and was always ready to help a racer in need or to pass on the benefit of his experience to others.

Even during his illness Graham never lost his desire to be part of the sport he loved, and although he was unable to defend the club title he won in 2010 Graham was still present in the Darley Moor paddock throughout 2011 to watch the action and support his fellow competitors.

A skilled engineer Graham completed the construction of his own unique sidecar chassis in 2010, fabricating all of the component parts, including the wheels himself, but sadly never got the opportunity to drive the outfit on the track after his illness cruelly struck.

Graham is survived by his devoted wife Jo and three children Nigel, Dan and Leah.

Graham’s funeral will take place on Monday 19th December 14.00 at St Peters Church, Church Hill, Hednesford,Staffs,WS12 1BD. Then afterwards at The Lamb & Flag Public House, John St, Wimblebury, Staffs, WS12 2RJ. All are welcome.
