NGRRC Anglesey: Weekend race preview

At this late stage of the season playing it safe and riding for points is most definitely not an option. With just this Pembrey two-day meeting, and the season finale to go for 2011 if you want to get your hands on one of the class championships you must pull out all the stops. There are several championships that are very tight point’s wise, so although wins are vital to keep your rivals at bey.... a slip up would be disastrous. This will play into the more experienced rider’s hands.

Phil Bevan missed the last meeting at Anglesey, and that has allowed Roo Cotton to close the lead that Bevan had at the head of both Open and Powerbike championships. Bevan is the lap record holder around this Pembrey circuit.... a circuit that incidently he runs a track day school at. Bevan from just outside Cardiff probably knows this 1.456 mile circuit better than any other rider, and after a no score from Anglesey he will be smarting.... and an angry Bevan is a fast Bevan. Roo Cotton, despite still being in his twenties has been racing a long time, starting on 125’s (...and winning championships) and has moved through 250’s, 600’s and now into the Superbike classes.

Could this be when Cotton draws on all that experience and racecraft to put one over on the Superbike master Bevan. Bevan has done the Open and Powerbike double championship win 2009 and ’10...... the defending champ would dearly love to make it a hat-trick, and it would be a brave man who would bet against him. Jason Oakes will also have to draw on all his racing experience as the Seton R6 Yamaha rider Heads the strong 600 open grid to stay in command in the championship. Sam Midlemas has impressed all year but a couple of no scores through injury have hampered his year. Keep an eye out too for Chris Beverley, Gary Lucitt, Darrel Jones and class new boy Ben Cole, all are proven race winners and up for a strong run to the end of the year.

Totally at the other end of the racing experience spectrum are the current crop of 125cc riders. Max Symonds will be out to take his second Formula 125 title in as many years before a move to a bigger machine in 2012, he will one more have to fight off fellow teen’s and even pre teen’s in the shape of Connor Moody and Bradley Jones. 14 year old Jamie Ashby took a double win here at Pembrey, and he will be hoping to repeat that this weekend on his Ducati Coventry RS125 Honda. Sticking with the pure race classes Daniel Jackson is the man to beat in the 450 open on his TZ250 Yamaha. Sian Brooks and Chris Harrison will be looking to break Jackson’s strangle hold on race wins.

As ever we have three classes for the standard road bikes in the shape of the popular streetstocks. Ben Mardsen heads the 400cc riders on his GF Racing Honda but Benedict Ireland and Steve Smulovic could easily cause an upset. Mattehew Billington has been in impressive form over the last three rounds to draw ahead in the points table, but could Welshman Darrel Jones, or Adam Grosch take the points here. It is the first time Billington has been back to Pembrey after his big accident here 4 months ago…. Will that play on his mind. The big 1300cc class sees a very tight affair with Tom Louth and Phil Evans on R1 Yamaha and CBR Honda Fireblade separated by just 2 points after the 10 rounds so far. These top two will fight it out for victory but Simon O’Donnell and Gary Johnson will challenge all the way, both have won rounds this year.

I have just said about Ben Marsden on his 400 Honda, but versatile Ben also rides an SV650 Suzuki in the Mini Twins class…. and the former super-cart racer leads the way in this one too from Matt Page. Page has taken six wins in a row to close in on Mardsen and is keen to keep the pressure on series leader Mardsen. Justin Garret will want to get his season back on track after a no scoring weekend at the previous Angelsey meeting, after taking a heavy fall from his SV650.

Shannon Hale looks on course to take her second title in two years, backing up last years streetstock win with the F400 class this year. She is in a strong position in the points table, but Max Alexandre, Alistair Rowland-Rouse, Ben Cole and Benedict Ireland are all up for the win here.

One of the hardest classes to call in the Sound of Thunder, the list of riders capable of the win include current series leader Sam Middlemas on his 675 Triumph… defending champion Paul Willis on his KTM RC8… Performance of the meeting winner last time out Darren Rumley on another KTM… Duncan Gibson a proven race winner who has been beset with bad luck this year on his 1098 Ducati… and Dave Beynon, returning from injury, but a winner on his day on his 1098. This will be one on THE races of the day.

As has been the pattern of the pre-injection class Adam Jeffrey on his 2001 spec R1 and Phil Hacker on his 1984 FJ 1100 will be head to head for top honours. Both have had up’s and down’s this year, they need a clean weekend with good points to settle down before the title decider at Thruxton in October.

The GP 45 classes have given us some great racing this year as the new class picks up pace. Chris Harrison on his twin cylinder SXV Aprilia and Matthew Andrew with his single cylinder RM Suzuki are the pick of the class but we cannot discount Robbie Robson, Gary Moran or Martin Thrower front standing atop the podium this weekend.

Rupert Archer and Jason Grimes have burst onto the Open Sidecar racing scene this year and head the way as we head totawrds the climax of the year but Phil Larder and Ken Edwards could pose a threat here. The former series runners up have been beset with problems this year are a looking for a good result. Hard charging team of Paul Corfield and Ritchie Bleakley too will be trying to get the better of top men Archer and Grimes. The F2 series sees two time champions Miles Bennett and Kevin Perry once more incharge of the Formula 2 category as trophy time comes a knocking.

This meeting also sees the final round of the year for the novice classes with Phil Evans and Tom Louth fighting it out for the 1300cc title and Sam Edwards and Connor Moody both chasing the 500cc silverware. Wayne Axon has already secured the Mini Twins newcomers but would still want to end the series with another win over Jody Hayes, Lee Phillips and the rest.

As I said it is a very important weekend for and one with an eye on 2011 glory, opportunities are running out this just one meeting remaining after this one.
