With so many riders taking double wins at the first meeting of the year just three weeks back at Brands Hatch, this weekend is when those that can keep up the pressure on will come out on top.
Local ace Phil Bevan on his Co-Ordit R1 Yamaha is the pick of the riders in the superbike classes. It is safe to say that Phil from Cardiff is not often headed at his local track. He has one main goal for this weekend though, and that is to rest back the NG Pembrey lap record, one which he held for so long, but was bettered at the end of 2007 at the BSN Autumn Challenge meeting.
Phil will have some impressive company to push him towards his target, as Lee Keeble, Mark Compton, Michael Blank, Chris Pope and Paul Shook are all on the superbike entry list. Keeble has made it very clear he is after the wins too, so won’t be too far away when the Progressive Solutions Powerbike and Phoenix Open are on the grid.
Corey Lewis has started his 2009 campaign in winning form…just the way he ended ’08. He certainly seems to be having fun with his racing so far this year as he tussled with Dan Moreton and Matt Hillier at Brands. Watch out too for Rowan Miller, last years F125 champ, is still just 13 years old but has now moved into the 125GP class and is currently an impressive 4th in the championship.
Teenager Danny Buchan headed the F400’s at Brands but defending champ Chris Beverley was sick all weekend. A full fit Beverley vs Buchan is an exiting prospect. Welshman and current 400-title holder Tony Davies will be looking to get back on the top step of the podium on home soil after Mike Russell got the better of his last time out.
Josh Day, Adam Tempest, Rich Bearcroft, Tim Woodhouse, Daniel Brill and Freddie Nickless have George White 600 class glory in their minds…although they all must think that 20 year-old Day has the edge this year….go on prove me wrong.
James Francis (400), Nick Andrews (700) and Hilary Phillips (1300) lead their respective Metzeler and DTR Streetstocks classes. Peter Carr and Adrian Shaw are also high on the list of possible race winners though.
Rich Troth, the ’08 400 Streetstock champion made a successful switch to the Big C Mini Twins on his SV650. He held back a spirited challenge from Stephen Sweetman and impressive novice Scott Witts. While in turn last years Mini Twin champ has moved up into the Spidey Sound of Thunder and spend the whole weekend at Brands fighting on track with two former SoT champions Adam Tempest and Andy Peck. All are capable of the win here.
Although Phil Dongworth and Gary Partridge took all the wins at Brands, they are not expected to do the full NG series…. Or so the class opposition hope !. That should leave the way open for Ian Drowne and Ken Edwards or Rod Robinson and Shelley Smithies to hit the front they are both looking for their maiden class victories. Pembrey could just be the right time and place.
