Sam Burman secured a fine tenth place and two other points scoring finishes in the Celtic Cup, the penultimate round of the Thundersport GP3 series held at Anglesey over the weekend.
Having never seen the new layout of the picturesque circuit, Burman had plenty of work to do in the two timed practice sessions. After learning the circuit in the first outing, she went on to slice just over five seconds off her lap time in the second session, placing her on the third row of the grid in 12th position for the three races to follow.
At the beginning of the race she found herself boxed in, and unfortunately lost several places as a result, and with the mid-field all setting very similar lap times, Burman found it difficult to get back on terms, resulting in her taking the chequered flag in 16th position.
Burman once again got a less than perfect start in race two, but was in determined mood, and soon became involved in the freight train battling for top ten positions. Exchanging places on several occasions, she finished the race in a very credible tenth place, during which she posted her fastest lap time of the weekend, a time of 1 minute 14.889 seconds.
In the final GP3 race of the weekend, Burman was battling with Josh Eversfield for much of the race, but also needed to keep a watchful eye on Jason Dobson, who was gaining all the time. In the closing stages Eversfield, eager to get on the gas, high sided coming on to the start / finish straight, leaving Burman and Dobson to go head to head to the chequered flag. After a close encounter, Burman took the position, gaining a well deserved 11th place.
During Sunday, Burman also had a ride on Barry Utting’s 250c Yamaha in the GP2 class, after Utting had earlier ruled himself out of the meeting due to injury. She started at the back of the grid and enjoyed the experience, finishing in tenth place of the fifteen competitors.
Sam Burman: “The results this weekend don’t really reflect how well I feel I did. I was disappointed to be down the field of course, but I feel that it was my starts that let me down. I was pleased with the lap times that I achieved around a place I had never seen before, and I felt that we wasn’t that far away, which surprised myself around a new track. I really enjoyed the track, and riding the 250 was amazing, thanks to Barry.”
