Wayne Ryan moved one step closer to becoming the 2009 Aprilia Superteen Challenge Champion this weekend after taking two wins at Anglesey with Thundersport GB.
As one of the only riders in the top ten of the championship not to have visited the circuit before, Wayne arrived at the Welsh circuit with a distinct disadvantage and initially struggled to match the pace of his title rivals during Friday testing.
By the time Saturday’s qualifying was upon us though, the Weetabix had been well and truly eaten as Wayne put together a series of quick laps and ended up second overall on the grid behind Aussie Matt Davies but more importantly, ahead of Andy Reid and Lee Jackson.
In race one, the usual high drama continued in the series as the top six including
Wayne, Andy Reid, Ben Gautrey, Lee Jackson, Connor Tagg and Matt Davies could have had a blanket thrown over them with some heart stopping fairing bashing.
But upon the departure of Matt Davies and Ben Gautrey, who was the fastest rider on the circuit up until his crash, Wayne had a bit of breathing space and promptly set the lap record before cruising home to his sixth win of the season and ninth consecutive podium.
In race two, Australian Matt Davies found his feet and went on to win ahead of
Connor Tagg and Lee Jackson, but with Wayne finishing fourth and inches away from the podium, his lead was still healthy going into Sunday’s racing.
Race three on television day, once again didn’t disappoint us, Davies was keen to notch up another win but this time he had Ben Gautrey to deal with, and the 13-year-old Aussie struggled to cope with the Southport rider lap after lap.
With Wayne sitting behind the pair on the final lap and riding cautiously to fend off Tagg and Jackson behind, nobody was expecting Ryan to make any audacious manoeuvres on the leading pair, but how wrong we were as the 13-year-old from Lydd in Kent shot up the inside of both Gautrey and Davies with just five corners remaining.
On the line, Ryan got win number seven of the year and his lead stretched to 39
points, and with five races left in the championship, whether he liked it or not, he had now been touted as firm favourite for the title.
The final race of the day saw the return of Ulsterman Andy Reid to the top step, the 15-year-old had waited since Oulton Park to add another win to his tally and Ben Gautrey completed a fine weekend with another solid second place finish.
He finished third ahead of Tagg and Jackson to take his eighteenth podium of the season and leave Anglesey with a comfortable 44 point lead.
“We had some problems on Friday and I didn’t feel myself, but thanks to the hard
work from Kev Spurr and the support from Paul and Emma, Saturday was a different day. Taking two wins was great and the third race where I passed Matt and Ben into the same corner to go on and win, gave me such a buzz. I know what I’ve got to do at Rockingham and can’t wait to get there," said the youngster.
After a somewhat questionable start to the season, Wayne has turned corners and now finds himself in pole position for taking the title.
With four riders behind him still able to mathematically win the Superteen title,
Wayne cannot afford to get complacent and the championship now rests upon four races at the Northamptonshire circuit of Rockingham.
