THUNDERSPORT ANGLESEY: WEEKEND RACE REVIEW

Michael Price from Brierley Hill became a double champion at Anglesey as he finally put an end to the Metzeler Formula 600 and Supertwins championships with Thundersport GB in North West Wales.

In the Formula 600 class, Richard McNeill and Darryl Cox in particular, who took his first victory in the class for 2009, both caused Price problems over the weekend as did Marty Lennon and Gary Jeffers, and when Price retired in race two, the IPS Triumph team looked worried.

In the supertwins class, Brian Greenfield secured second overall and Scot Adam moved closer to securing third but after dominant performances in the final Supertwins and Formula 600 races, in which he attained both lap records, Price secured the titles which have been well deserved to say the least.

Price was just one of many champions crowned at Anglesey though, Peter Baker wrapped up his CIA Insurance GP1 crown too, but he also had a fright in race two as a crash involving himself Stu Hall and Glen Shaw, meant he had to sit and watch the defending champion Gary May take his first win since Oulton Park, and close the gap down for the final race.

Baker kept his cool though and with a second placed finish, he wrapped it all up and leaves May to fight an injured Hoyles for second and third overall, that’s if Rob recovers from a broken collar bone suffered on Friday.

Scott Kelly and Angelo De Rosa both claimed podiums also but the best performer in the GP1 class this time around was Phil Crowe, who raced to two stunning victories and now seeks a solid Rockingham to maybe even sneak third overall.

Crowe looked at his best with a lap record at Anglesey, and with a good bike under him for 2010, and the experience of knowing all the circuits now, he’d be a hard man to beat next season.

In the BSN.com Junior Powerbike class, Rob Elsmere needed only a few good results to take the title and did so with two irrepressible wins on the Saturday.
Elsmere, who has been racing on the IN competition Aprilia RRV 550 all season, was in control for much of the weekend, and although Sam Coventry is closing in on second overall, it was great to see Rob win his first ever major title in the fourteen years of racing that he’s been competing in.

On the Sunday, Will Hodgson topped off a fabulous weekend with a wonderful victory on the all new Aprilia 450 twin which was unveiled this weekend. Hodgson beat Elsmere in the final race of the day and excited the paddock on a bike that’s rumoured to have its own one make series for 2010.

To add to the happiness, Elsmere also broke the lap record on the Aprilia, taking Clint De Tarnowsky’s record from 2008.

In the Minitwins Tim Jones edged closer to taking the championship. Jones was ever present on the podium and were it not for some solid riding by Chris Boland and in particular Clive White, he may well have taken it at Anglesey.

White is by far the biggest improver the class has seen this season though, and could well be favourite to upset the results again at Rockingham, even if he can’t win the title himself.

In the Moto 450 class, Darren Smith raced home to four victories to take the Moto 450 crown for 2009, he finished ahead of John Coventry who himself moved up to fourth and could sneak third if Rockingham goes to plan.

One newly crowned champion that left it until the final race to take glory was Dan Miles in the Pirelli Superstock 600 class.
With Ash Chivers and Jonathan Lodge winning race one and two and Marty Lennon again in the running with some good solid podium finishes, Miles, Gazzard and Ahmet were challenged at Anglesey but in the final race, Gazzard upped the anti with a fine performance that almost rewarded him with a win.

On the final lap, Miles pushed all the way and despite many thinking he should settle for second and take the solid points into Rockingham, Miles wanted the championship there and then and passed Tom into ‘Rocket-in’ to take an impressive and brave victory to become the 2009 champion.

The E2E Solutions GP3 class was quite open going into Wales, Fraser Rogers was 17 points clear of Sam Hornsey, and with Hornsey coming in on the back of three straight victories, all bets were off for the three races to come.

Hornsey got straight to business in race one, and just when it looked like he had the race sewn up, the fat lady sang and Hornsey went down leaving Rogers to take victory ahead of Joel Williams and Curtis Wright.

In race two Rogers had the bit between his teeth and he took full advantage of Hornsey’s bad luck by taking another victory ahead of Curtis Wright and Tom Carne and would have had three wins from three, were it not for some admirable racing by Curtis Wright who stood tall to take his first win of 2009 ahead of Rogers and Hornsey and take the GP3 lap record in the process.

Another rider that featured well was Jamie Harris, as the Welshman who lives a few miles away from the circuit took two fourth’s, his best ever finishes in the Thundersport series to date.

Rogers moves ever so close to taking the overall GP3 championship, but thanks to Arnie Shelton’s fall in the final race of the day, the 13-year-old from Chippenham was crowned the GP3 Cup Champion, which is one down, and one to go for the talented youngster.

The GiMoto Streetfighter ‘A’ class took a hit at Brands Hatch, when Jamie Wilkins ended his championship winning chances with a fall that meant his bike was too damaged to fix.

On borrowed machinery then, Wilkins entered Anglesey with damage limitation in his sights as he tries desperately to cling on for second overall.

This meant that Andy Denyer was only a few points away from claiming the championship, knowing that if he simply kept his run of 23 consecutive podiums going, then he would surely win the series.

On the Saturday, Keith Smith was the man on form as he won his second and third races of the season to move into third overall, but Denyer didn’t have to wait too long for the results, his two wins on Sunday and 27th consecutive podium finishes means that he is the 2009 GiMoto Streetfighter Champion.

In the ‘B’ class, things are far from over. Solid finishes from Craig Morley, Barry Utting and a first win since Cadwell Park for Ian Popplewell meant that all three are split by under 20 points going into Rockingham with Utting just holding the lead.

Morley looked set to leave Anglesey in the lead after a brilliant weekend, but his suspension snapped in the final race and leaves him with a predicament going into the final round.

Both lap records went in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ class too, Denyer with the ‘A’ record and Morley with the ‘B’.

The Bridgestone Thundersport 500 class is nearly decided now as Jonathan Harrison took three from four wins at Anglesey and take a 75 point advantage with him.

In race two, Harrison nearly threw it all away with a crash at the corkscrew to leave Butcher the winner, but when Butcher fell himself in race three and injuring himself, it left the next 50 points up for grabs, and Harrison duly took them.

Matt Bainbridge came the closest to beating the #49 machine in the final race and Chris Pickersgill was back to his best as the battle for third overall continues.

Finally to the Aprilia Superteens, and Wayne Ryan took two wins and two podiums to extend his lead to 44 in the championship going into Rockingham.

There were wins for Matt Davies, and even Andy Reid took his first victory since Oulton Park, but with Ben Gautrey on form and Connor Tagg getting closer to that first win since round one, Lee Jackson was left to watch his on-circuit rival Ryan take the two victories and hold a significant advantage going into the final round at Rockingham.

Andy Reid’s win in the final race of the day not only hushes the critics of bigger riders on the Superteen machines, but with him taking a new lap record, it practically mutes them.
