Thundersport Brands Hatch: Weekend race preview

With just three rounds remaining, we expect to see the first champions of 2011 crowned this weekend in Kent as the Thundersport GB Championship heads to Brands Hatch.

In the LMB Streetfighters, Class ‘A’ leader Keith Smith just needs four solid finishes to keep the likes of Steve Bradbury and Andy Denyer off his tail to become the Champion after the third year of asking.

Barry Utting just needs a single point in class ‘B’ to successfully defend the title that he won last season. The Penrith Motorcycles sponsored rider has won more Thundersport GB races than any other competitor to date, and even if he does retain his crown in race one, he still has a Streetfighter Extreme series to chase.

In class ‘C’, Tony Hughes will have to wait a round before he considers becoming a champion. He is yet to shrug off Brad Davey in the Supermoto category and if Brad has things his way at Brands, it could go down to the wire.

In the Alto Digital GP2 class, Reading’s Connor Tagg could literally cruise around the next two rounds to clinch the title for 2011. His competitors Josh Daley, Adam Palfreman and Ian Popplewell are all far too busy scuffling for second and third overall in a series that has a champion in waiting.

Popplewell may have the Minitwins Cup to think about though, as a couple of decent results here would crown him the Champion. With all riders able to drop their worst round, simply staying clear of Sam Nicholson should be enough for ‘Pop’ to celebrate on Saturday evening.

In the Nitro GP3 class, with Aaron Hay not having attended Pembrey, James Robinson has shot to the top of the leader board. With 300 points still up for grabs though, this could still go either way.

With the exception of the Bridgestone Thundersport 500’s, the rest of the championships are wide open heading into Brands, but having said that, last years Minitwins Champion Andy Lawson will be made to work for that 500 crown with Adam Shelton for company.

Shelton, from Hull, has won the last eight races and with each rider dropping their worst round, it means that Lawson’s lead is just over the 100 point mark. It may sound like a tall task for Adam but another 4 race wins and things could get tasty.

In the Aprilia Superteens, Colchester’s Tom Oliver is feeling the heat now as his lead has now slipped to just 11 points. Having led the series since the opening round, Tom remains consistent as ever but 13-year-old Joe Francis from Chester is proving to be a handful and the Newcomer enters this event having won eight of the last nine races in the series.

The best of the rest are a match for each other as they scrap for third overall but it’s the fight for the title that’s caught everyone’s eye as the next two rounds see us visit Tom’s closest circuit at Brands, followed by Joe’s local Oulton Park.

The all new ‘big brother’ to the Superteens, the Aprilia RRV450 class fails to disappoint either as three riders are all capable of winning the championship with 10 races left and just 37 points between the them.

Reading’s Connor Tagg leads after exceptional performances at Snetterton and Pembrey but will enter Brands with two equally talented riders in James Folkard and Jake Dixon standing next to him.

Both Tagg and Dixon will consider the weekend as their home round but you wouldn’t bet against Liverpool’s Folkard to happily upset the party before we travel to his local track next month.

In the Bikesport News Superstock 600 Championship, Nick Anderson holds a 20 point lead over Scotsman Paul Wishart, who won all three races at Pembrey in style last month.

Tommy Mountain and Tom Meehan all stand small chances of winning the title, but they can still be a nuisance with three rounds to go and if Anderson and Wishart were to damage each others chances, the two Tom’s would be more than happy to pick up the pieces.

For the Morello Services GP1 crown, defending champion Phil Crowe remains strong favourite going into Brands but with the top three all having missed one event, dropping a round each now becomes irrelevant and the battle between Crowe, Ian Mackman and Mick Robertson is as clear cut as it could be with 75 points splitting the trio.

Mackman has a Superstock 1000 lead to protect though and with Robertson and Alex Heaton both breathing down his neck, it could make Brands extremely interesting for a number of different reasons.

In the Supertwins, since the absence of Scot Adam, Lee Reveley’s job in becoming the Supertwins Champion for a third time has been made a whole lot easier and provided he doesn’t do anything silly, it should be success for Reveley.

As for the Motorbike Accident Law Formula 600 Championship, Ben Field looks to hold onto a 35 point lead over Richard McNeill. The pair had been locked in the tightest of duals before Pembrey but after some stunning riding from Field and third placed man Craig Sproston, McNeill slipped a little further behind and needs a good weekend here at Brands.
