Lincolnshire will light up this May bank holiday as Thundersport GB travel to Cadwell Park for round four of the 2011 Championships.
The televised series, being aired on both Eurosport and Motors TV is now pumping out four programmes per event thanks to its growing popularity and if last season’s visit to the Mountain circuit is anything to go by, expect lap records to change and some fantastic fairing bashing action.
In the LMB Streetfighter class, you get a chance to see the very best riders do battle in a naked bike class with three separate categories based on engine size. Doncaster’s Keith Smith enters the round as series leader in the ‘A’ class, whilst Penrith’s Barry Utting will also be out to defend his ‘B’ title and see off the Supermoto riders that include Tony Hughes and his son Marc, from Manchester.
During our last round at Anglesey, we lost our Alto Digital Thundersport GP2 series leader to injury after Ricardo Ballerini smashed his collar bone into four bits, and whilst the Italian from Walton sits this one out, it gives us a chance to focus on Reading’s Connor Tagg on the delightful Aprilia RRV 450 and Wigan’s Josh Daley.
Don’t count out Minitwins Championship leader Ian Popplewell though (Hull), on home turf, Poppy has always looked good around here and he’s sure to join Adam Palfreman (Letchworth) at the front as the pair look to undo the good work of the youngsters up ahead.
The Aprilia Superteens has its own show called ‘GP Racing Dream’ these days on British Eurosport and it’s easy to see why when you consider what enjoyment the series has brought Thundersport GB since 2008. Along with previous Champions such as Cal Crutchlow, Casey Stoner, Fraser Rogers etc... Colchester’s Tom Oliver is looking to follow in their footsteps as the current leader of the Championship.
There is no shortage of competition for him though as some seven or eight riders could easily find themselves on the top step this weekend, so keep an eye out for Joe Francis (Chester), Alistair Dayus (Birmingham), Bradley Jones (Stalbridge) and Ben Luxton (Stockport). On a good day, there’s a realistic possibility that you may even need to add names such as Twyman, Symonds and Coomber to that group.
The Bikesport News Superstock 600 class is yet to have a race completed without there being a scramble to the line so far in 2011 and we all hope it’s much the same at Cadwell Park on Sunday and Monday.
The surprise package of this season has been young Adam Robinson of Helmshore, as the ex-Superteen rider has really got to grips with his Triumph 675 and leads the series coming into round four but not by a lot.
Scottish rider Paul Wishart, who is using this season to learn the British circuit’s, has proved his raw talent and sits in second place overall, whilst Shrewsbury’s Tom Meehan will look to forget about his bad luck in Anglesey and get back to his winning ways at Cadwell, as will Umberleigh’s Nick Anderson.
Bridgestone Thundersport 500 series leader Andy Lawson saw his advantage cut in Wales a few weeks ago after an indifferent round from the Scotsman left Wigan’s Colin McCabe and Dorset’s Darryl Harrison to close the Championship right up in time for Cadwell Park.
If Steve Tomes makes a return to the class then expect to see him fighting for the wins and also keep an eye on a newcomer to the series as former Superteen title challenger and local rider Adam Shelton takes to the saddle of a CB500 and attempts to upset the plot.
Defending Morello Services GP1 Champion Phil Crowe is eager to blitz his own lap record at his home circuit this weekend as the Market Rasen rider, sponsored by Holbeach Tyres looks to become the first rider to defend the illustrious crown in 2011.
With rumours of rival Ian Mackman concentrating on the TT and missing this round, it gives a chance to the 2009 Champion Peter Baker to get back to his best form after a concerning start to the campaign which has seen the experienced rider bite the dust quite a few times already.
In a class full of Superbike, Superstock and Supertwin machinery, look out for Wrexham’s Angelo DeRosa, Dawderhall’s Michael Robertson, Lee Reveley of Coventry and the two Knight Road Racers in Alex Heaton and Scot Adam.
The Aprilia RRV 450 Championship is into its third round of existence this weekend as Liverpool’s James Folkard looks to add to his already successful year with another four wins.
The former Superteen Champion, sponsored by Minards Pavlou solicitors will have his work cut out this weekend as all neutral’s hope to see Connor Tagg, Jake Dixon and Jamie Thackeray all pushing the series leader in this all new Championship brought to Thundersport by IN Competition.
In the Nitro GP3 class which will be an addition to the RRV 450 grid, listen out for James Robinson (younger brother of Adam in the Superstock 600’s) and Ian Raybon, who both took solid results in Anglesey.
One of the closest Championships after just three rounds so far in 2011 is the Motorbike Accident Law Formula 600 Championship. With double Champion Mike Price not out to defend his title again in 2011, it has left a tasty affair at the front with Chris Mort, Richard McNeill, Craig Sproston, Ben Field and Adam Oliver, all fighting to become the new F600 Champion.
