After the wettest season on record at Thundersport GB, 2011 concludes this weekend at its home, Mallory Park, as riders from five separate classes fight it out to become Champion.
The Morello Services GP1 class sees three riders stand head to head with just eleven points separating them after Ian Mackman struggled to fend off defending Champion Phil Crowe and talented rookie Mick Robertson back at Oulton Park.
Mackman, racing on the Kemtile Suzuki GSXR1000, was always going to be a contender after he announced he'd be competing in the series back in 2010. Entering the class on a stock machine, his intentions were to win the Superstock Cup, an ambition that he's a whisker away from achieving, but since the start of the season back in March, Ian has found himself embroiled in a battle that sees him leading the GP1 class overall.
With only three wins outright in 2011, you might ask how he's managed to leapfrog the likes of Pete Baker, Phil Crowe etc..... but with 16 podium finishes in the 20 races he's entered and not a single DNF, it all makes sense.
As for Phil Crowe, the defending champion has had an up and down year to say the least. Twelve podium finishes is four short of Mackman's total so far this year but it's been the six wins that have kept him in it. Up until Brands Hatch, it was Crowe's championship to lose, but thanks to a heavy fall in race one on the Saturday in Kent, he almost kissed goodbye to the title thanks to the injury that kept him out of the three races that weekend.
At Oulton Park, Crowe used up yet another life after falling in qualifying and only finishing seventh in race one, but the gamble to race on a brand new set of shiny slicks for race two on a drying circuit took some guts. His brave third place finish in the double points race has put him right back in the frame and with a sigh of relief, the HMT BMW rider enters the final round knowing that if he wins all three races, he is Champion once more.
So what about Mick Robertson? Having never seen an English or Welsh circuit in his life before April, I've run out of positives to talk about when it comes to this rider from Danderhall in Scotland. We knew he was a talent after he picked up his first outright win of the season back at Anglesey but it was from Pembrey onwards that we've seen the real deal. Racing on a stock Kawasaki ZXR10 and supported by Carnies Auto Centre, we've seen our very own William Wallace in the last three meetings and whilst his chances of claiming the Superstock crown are slim, he is just eleven points shy of Mackman's total in GP1, having racked up 13 podiums which includes four wins.
Oulton Park can bite hard and even then, the Scotsman braved the conditions, gambled on dry tryes for the second race and saw off challenges from Mackman, Crowe, Baker, Ingram and Dickinson to win the race and claim 50 points.
There is no doubt in my mind that this guy really could go on and become a well known star of bike racing and it could all start here this weekend as in his first full season, he challenges for the big one at Mallory Park.
75 points are up for grabs in Leicestershire and with 2009 Champion Peter Baker eager to make up for Oulton, which saw his championship chances disappear, who will have the last say in the Morello Services GP1 class!?
The BSN Superstock 600 class has supplied us with some unforgettable racing so far in 2011 and it is of no surprise to me that the four riders that put on a great show for us in the opening round of the series back in March are sitting in the top four of the championship overall.
Lincoln's Tommy Mountain has at times been unstoppable on his Cool Cow sponsored Yamaha R6 this season. Having not attended every round of the season, Mountain has racked up 14 podiums in the class and of those, eight were wins. His supreme wet weather skills have contributed to these stats enormously but don't assume he can't win in the dry because you'd be wrong.
With only a few points gathered at Oulton Park, Mountain has a six point lead going into Mallory, which suggests this one could go down to the final race of the year on Sunday.
His biggest threat this weekend comes in the form of Nick Anderson, the NMA Flooring rider, also on a Yamaha R6, has had a patchy season also with a string of great results being followed by a fall here and some bad luck there.
Anderson, from Umberleigh, has collected 13 podiums this year with three wins included and up until Oulton Park, he'd been the favourite. He is looking for some revenge though after a round to forget in Cheshire and it won't be the first time these two have locked horns either, as the pair competed against each other for two years in the Aprilia Superteen Challenge.
For Paul Wishart, this event is going to be torture. A good friend of Mick Robertson, Wishart, from Methven in Scotland, was also new to the scene at the start of this season and has proven to be a great talent and a true gentleman. Paul is locked on points with Nick Anderson and would have had a shot at the title, but due to a fall in practice at Oulton Park which left him with a broken wrist, the MW1 Motorcycles rider is forced to watch this weekend as he thinks back to what might have been in his first season.
Finally to a man that could and probably should have been in the running also, Tom Meehan. Tom's season started with a bang with five podiums and two wins but he then hit a run of bad luck during the next four rounds which consequently ended his title hopes. The last eleven races have seen a dramatic improvement in consistency however and whilst Tom will be frustrated not to be in the running for the title, he'd settle for a race win in the final meeting of the season, of that I am sure.
Remember the final nail biting round of the Aprilia Superteen Challenge back in 2009 between Wayne Ryan and Lee Jackson? Well we could be in for a repeat this weekend as Britain's finest 12-18 year old riders take to the Mallory Park circuit with two riders in with a shout of clinching the illustrious title.
A few weeks ago, Tommy Hill and Chaz Davies were crowned champions of BSB and WSS respectively, both of whom started out their careers in the Superteens. It's yet more continuous proof in the pudding that there is no better series to begin your career.
For this season, Newcomer Joe Francis from Chester leads the way after a magnificent debut season in motorcycle racing. Joe has notched up an impressive 23 podiums in all so far this year with 13 race victories and the Motrac Racing rider looks every bit a future champion at the tender age of 13.
His challenger comes in the form of Tom Oliver from Colchester. With 21 podiums and seven wins in 2011, Tom has spent the majority of the season as the championship leader but has now failed to reach the rostrum since Pembrey, a statistic that has halted his momentum.
Back at Oulton Park however, a crash in race one for series leader Francis, gifted Tom of a lifeline. The two races were for double points and thanks to Tom picking up 18 more than Joe over the event, the Colchester rider that is in his third season of the Superteens is just 22 points behind Francis heading into the final four races.
Neither rider really deserves to finish second overall but there can only be one winner and considering both Joe and Tom have collected three wins each over the eight races already contested at Mallory Park this season, you'd be foolish to bet on a winner for this one.
The only other championship that goes down to the wire is the all new Aprilia RRV450 Challenge. Liverpool's James Folkard leads the way and needs to stay sensible this weekend if he wants to become the first ever rider to win both the Aprilia Superteen title and the Aprilia 450 crown.
The Minards Pavlou sponsored rider has 25 podium finishes to his name this year with ten wins and thought he'd done enough to secure the championship back at Oulton Park but thanks to Jake Dixon's persistence, Folkard still has work to do at Mallory.
Dixon himself, has clocked up 24 podiums with nine wins, and the rider from Dover is fully aware that only four wins will do this weekend, but if he shows anything like the form he had at Oulton Park a fortnight ago, he'll have the former Superteen Champion Folkard worried.
Last season's runner-up Connor Tagg will be desperately disappointed not to stand a chance of winning this years crown. The smooth rider from Reading has been in the running all season long but since his first DNF of the season at Brands Hatch last month, the dream has slowly faded away and even though he too carries an impressive record of 22 podiums and nine wins, it's all about pride this weekend for Connor, who could well have a strong say in who wins.
Folkard has done almost everything right so far this year, he has been the more consistent rider and will be confident that he can do the job at Mallory Park in the first race alone, but Jake Dixon is hungry for more wins and won't settle for anything less than 100 points this weekend.
If this isn't enough to whet your appetite, then we have action from the rest of the Thundersport GB classes but in truth, you'd be crazy not to book ringside seats for the 2011 showdown.
