With the likes of Nicky Hayden watching as well as the world's top team managers, this weekend’s Aprilia Dunlop Superteen double points race had some added pressure involved, as the Superteens were one of seven support classes that Thundersport GB had out at the British Grand Prix.
Having qualified fourth on a grid of 44 hungry 12-18 year olds, Wayne was one place ahead of Championship leader Andy Reid who went into the race 23 points ahead of the 13-year-old from Lydd in Kent.
Once the lights had gone out though, Ryan was on a charge and got the hole-shot in front of pole sitter Lee Jackson, Connor Tagg and Aussie Matt Davies.
Mid way through the 30 mile race, Ryan was sitting behind his Australian on-circuit rival Matt Davies, as the pair became part of a four-way battle for the lead along with Lee Jackson and Newcomer Danny Murphy.
All four riders had their turn to lead the race and with a few laps to go, the persistently quick Aussie Matt Davies made his break, putting in the two fastest laps of the race to break out a bit of breathing space in the lead, whilst Ryan and Murphy fought for second ahead of Jackson who faded slightly in the closing stages.
As Davies crossed the line to take the double points victory, Ryan looked to have been pushed down to third when Murphy took a tumble on the final corner, leaving Wayne to come home in second ahead of Lee Jackson in third.
Further behind, Connor Tagg had taken fourth overall and Andy Reid was fifth, but with the race being staged for double points, Wayne’s 40 points to Andy Reid’s 22, now means that the youngster from Kent, moves to within five points of the championship lead before we head to Wayne’s local circuit, Brands Hatch.
“I’m really happy with this result. Having just one race but for double points means that the stakes are high and it was important to finish. In all honesty, I was happy to finish third behind Danny, because I knew I’d finished a couple of places ahead of Andy, but when Danny fell, It felt good to take second. I’m glad Danny was OK and I’m just looking forward to my local circuit at Brands next month
“I’ve got to say a massive thanks to Kev and all in the TAG Racing team, and a big thanks to Paul and Emma too, without them, this wouldn’t be possible.”
